16. רַבִּי חִיָּיא פָּתַח, (תהלים פא) עֵדוּת בִּיהוֹסֵף שָׂמוֹ וְגוֹ’. הֲרֵי פֵּרְשׁוּהָ שֶׁלָּמַד שִׁבְעִים לָשׁוֹן, וּלְשׁוֹן הַקֹּדֶשׁ יוֹתֵר. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב (שם) שְׂפַת לֹא יָדַעְתִּי אֶשְׁמָע. אֲבָל מַה זּוֹ עֵדוּת? בֹּא וּרְאֵה, בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁאֵשֶׁת פּוֹטִיפַר אָחֲזָה בּוֹ לְאוֹתוֹ הַדָּבָר, עָשָׂה יוֹסֵף עַצְמוֹ כְּמִי שֶׁלֹּא יוֹדֵעַ לְשׁוֹנָהּ, וְכֵן בְּכָל יוֹם עַד אוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה אַחֲרוֹנָה, שֶׁכָּתוּב (בראשית לט) וַתִּתְפְּשֵׂהוּ בְּבִגְדוֹ. מַה זֶּה וַתִּתְפְּשֵׂהוּ? אֶלָּא מִשּׁוּם שֶׁעָשָׂה עַצְמוֹ כְּמִי שֶׁלֹּא יוֹדֵעַ לְשׁוֹנָהּ, וְרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ צוֹוַחַת כְּנֶגְדּוֹ: (משלי ז) לִשְׁמָרְךָ מֵאִשָּׁה זָרָה מִנָּכְרִיָּה אֲמָרֶיהָ הֶחֱלִיקָה. מַה בָּא לְהַשְׁמִיעֵנוּ? אֶלָּא כָּל מִי שֶׁשּׁוֹמֵר עַצְמוֹ מִזֶּה, מִתְקַשֵּׁר לַשְּׁכִינָה וְאָחוּז בְּאוֹתָהּ עֵדוּת. וּמַהִי? ה’ שֶׁנִּתּוֹסְפָה בּוֹ, שֶׁכָּתוּב עֵדוּת בִּיהוֹסֵף שָׂמוֹ. גַּם כָּאן הִתּוֹסְפָה י’ בְּפִינְחָס עַל שֶׁקִּנֵּא בָזֶה.

“ וַתִּתְפְּשֵׂהוּ בְּבִגְדוֹ לֵאמֹר, שִׁכְבָה עִמִּי; וַיַּעֲזֹב בִּגְדוֹ בְּיָדָהּ, וַיָּנָס וַיֵּצֵא הַחוּצָה. ”
“that she caught him by his garment (Also means ‘his betrail’), saying: ‘Lie with me.’ And he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.”
When Joseph worked in the house of Potiphar, he was seduced by the wife of Potiphar to have sex with her. He acted as if he didn’t understand her language and avoided her until she caught him run away from her.
“עֵדוּת, בִּיהוֹסֵף שָׂמוֹ– בְּצֵאתוֹ, עַל-אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם;
שְׂפַת לֹא-יָדַעְתִּי אֶשְׁמָע. ”
“He appointed it in Joseph (יוסף became יהוֹסֵף. The letter ה was added to his name) for a testimony, when He went forth against the land of Egypt. The speech of one that I knew not did I hear: ”
Joseph stopped himself from losing his great light by avoiding great temptations from the wife of Potiphar who was very beautiful and a sexual goddess. He merited to be the chariot for the Sefirah of Yessod and controlled the sustenance of the world.
The world of Malchut is a dark world without connection to the upper Sefirot drawing light of life and sustenance. The level above us is Yessod that is inclusive of all the Sefirot above it.
On the spiritual levels we can connect to Yessod with meditation, and Zohar study. On the material level we do that with Tithing and Tzedaka, which is giving money to support continuation of Light and life (spiritual channels) in the world.
The sexual organs is the aspect of Yessod. We use sex to draw light from the level of Yessod to Malchut, which is the vessel connected to Yessod. The light that comes from this unification of Light (Yessod) and Vessel (Malchut) comes from Binah and gives us great pleasures.
Drawing light is relatively easy but to maintain it, we need to overcome the negative side. They use us as a tool to draw light because they cannot connect to it by themselves. When we fail to use the light in a proper way, we lose it and they jump quickly to grab it.
The channel of Yessod is the source of life and all kind of sustenance for the world. This is where we are all tested. Desire for the self alone creates darkness in a person’s life and affects his environment. Improper sexual relations may drain a person’s light and bring him to darkness, which is chaos in life.
Zimri, the head of a tribe, was having sexual acts with women from the other side. That connection of Yessod from the pure side to the negative side drained the light from the Israelites and they began to die.
When Pinchas stopped that, he cleansed the channel and for that God rewarded him with the gift of Immortality.
