Zohar Vayetze

Genesis 28:11
“He reached a certain place and spent the night there because the sun had set. He took from the stones from the place, put it there at his head, and lay down in that place. ”

Jacob went out of Beer Sheba, leaving the holiness, going toward Haran, a place of the impure side. On his way he arrived to a place where God set the sun down earlier than its time, so Jacob could stop there. Jacob called this place “the house of God”, “בית אל” because he saw its holiness.

As we explained in the previous study, that place is the ‘Middle Point’ of Creation, where Zeir Anpin connects to Malchut. Jacob took from the stones of the place and the Zohar explains that those were precious stones from the supernal spiritual level.

The Zohar explains that the 12 stones that Jacob arranged under his head made a connection to the Light that connects the six sefirot of Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach , Hod and Yessod.
12-bordersChessed – South
Gevura – North
Tiferet – East
Netzach – Up
Hod – Down
Yessod – West

There are 12 shared borders between the sides of the cube that has 6 directions. We make special connection to these spiritual ‘depths’ during the holiday of Sukkot when using the Lulav (palm branch) and Etrog (the citrus fruit).

The 12 are also the aspects of the 12 tribes coming out of Jacob and the 12 Zodiacal Constellations.

Genesis 49:24
“yet his bow remained unmoved; his arms were made agile by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob (from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel),”

Before Jacob left the world he gathered his sons and gave them special blessings. In the blessings that he bestowed on Joseph, he made a connection to the moment (Genesis 39:12) Joseph became ‘Joseph the Tzadik’, ‘Joseph The Righteous’ and the chariot for the Sefira of Yessod. Jacob also connect Joseph/Yessod to Malchut, described in the verse as ‘The stone of Israel’. This is what we study in Zohar Vayetze with “and Jacob arrived to the place” and gathered the stones (Genesis 28:11) that turned into one stone (Genesis 28:18) under his head.
