Zohar Vayechi

Genesis 42:1,2

“Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, “Why are you staring at one another?””
“He said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain (שֶׁבֶר) in Egypt; go down (רְדוּ) there and buy some for us from that place, so that we may live and not die.””

The Zohar explains that Jacob saw that he will have great opportunity to reveal light in Egypt and he send his sons ahead without hesitation.

The Zohar reveals that the word שֶׁבֶר implies to the broken heart that Jacob will experienc in Egypt.

This word usually translated as ‘grain’ or ‘corn’ because the Egyptians collected grains during the seven good years. The word literally means ‘a broken’.

Isaiah 57:15
“and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite”

Jacob’s heart was broken because he lost the important connection to his son, Joseph. When he went down to the lower level of Egypt his broken vessel expressed a greater lack of light. The light then could fill his vessel and elevate him to the higher level of prophecy as we studied previously.

Lesson: To draw greater light to our vessel and manifest fulfillment, we need to bring it to a ‘broken’ state. Meaning that it has nothing of its own but desire for the light.

The heart and mind of the person are his tools to create vessels for the light. The main problem is that there’s nothing to hide or fake. The light that may come to an impure vessel is very little or corrupted with judgment and ‘partnership’ of the negative side.
To build a pure vessel one should come with a broken heart and as a poor, begging the light to receive for the benefits of others.
