Numbers 30:3
“אִישׁ כִּי-יִדֹּר נֶדֶר לַיהוָה, אוֹ-הִשָּׁבַע שְׁבֻעָה לֶאְסֹר אִסָּר עַל-נַפְשׁוֹ–לֹא יַחֵל, דְּבָרוֹ: כְּכָל-הַיֹּצֵא מִפִּיו, יַעֲשֶׂה”
“If a man vows a vow to YHVH, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.”

On Yom Kippur we cancel oaths שבועה and vows נדרים. The Zohar explains that an oath שבועה is on the level of Malchut and the name אדני ADNY and a Vow נדר is on the level of Zeir Anpin and the name YHVH יהוה.

‘If a man vows a vow to YHVH’ reveals the connection of vow to Zeir Anpin and defines it on a higher level than oath. For that reason a vow is more powerful and able to draw light from Chokmah.

Why does the Torah instruct us to follow our words and never to break them? God created the worlds by the power of his mouth. When he said a command, it happened immediately. We were created in his own ‘image’, meaning Tree of Life and inherited this ability on the Malchut level. We should know that the mouth is a powerful spiritual tool. With few words we can change the life of a person forever.
Vows and oaths create vessels that make the light available for their fulfillment.
The instruction to do ‘according to all that proceeds out of his mouth’ is important because the words are channels of Light and if we don’t use that light for its purpose then the negative side grabs it. Uttering words create fields of energy, vessels, with potential light that require manifestation in Malchut.

People make vows to YHVH promising to follow some actions in return for a specific light that they are lacking. The use of vows can draw great light into our lives but the risk of not following it is worse.

If we neglect to use them or channel their light in the proper direction then it becomes ‘prey’ for the negative side.

Yom Kippur is our best connection to cleanse the negativity related to our vows and oaths and remove their negativity from us.

We should not wait for Yom Kippur for this cleansing because the judgment that comes from not following our vows and oaths can affect us much earlier. To protect ourselves from that judgment we use the words ‘B’li Neder’, meaning without a vow when we make promises to other people. With that, we leave the vessel at a potential level that doesn’t attract the light until the action is made.
