Zohar Vayishlach

King Saul wasn’t following the ways of God, and the prophet Samuel was instructed to anoint David, the son of Yishai, to be the new King of Israel. It was done quietly in the presence of David’s family. When the new king was anointed, King Saul lost the protection of God. In the meantime King David harnessed the new powers and the protection of the Shechina to kill Goliath the Philistine and earn a reputation of a great hero.

1 Samuel 18:7
“”Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!””

King Saul wasn’t happy and was looking to kill King David who didn’t wait and run away to the territory of Achish the king of Gath.

This story is just an intro to understanding the protection of the Shechina that we studied in previous DZ with the verse from Psalms 34:8
“The angel of YHVH encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them”

The angel is the aspect of the Shechina that protects those who are with higher level of connection to YHVH. King David had that, especially after he was selected by God to be a king.
The Zohar tells us that king David was not happy about the existence of people with ‘crazy’ behavior. We learn that from Psalms 73:3 “כִּי-קִנֵּאתִי, בַּהוֹלְלִים” “I wanted to remove the negativity of those who are ‘crazy’”. King David asked God to remove this ‘quality’ from people but God told him that one day he will need the ability to behave ‘crazy’.

King David was taken to King Achish but before he got there, he changed his behaviour and became ‘crazy’. The King saw that and told his people to send away this crazy person.

“So he pretended to be insane in their presence; and while he was in their hands he acted like a madman, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting saliva run down his beard.”

The interesting part of this teaching from the Zohar is that the Shechina surrounded King David and protected him by making him ‘crazy’. This simple act created the necessary protection from king Achish and his people.

We don’t know how or what kind of protection we get. Some people may be in a poor state and lack of some kind but if they are with good connection to the Light they can be certain that their temporary state is a form of protection.

The Zohar says that the Shechina dwells in the land of Israel where it receive its nourishment from the Light. Then how come the Shechina went with King David to a land of Gath. The explanation is that the protection of the Shechina extends beyond the borders of Israel.
When Jacob went to Laban and came back from him, he had the protection of the Shechina at all times.
