Zohar Yitro
Continued from previous DZ

The Zohar continues here to reveal the process of creation and how Keter and the world of Atzilut came to be.
This is the study of the Tree of Life, how it came to be from the thought of the Creator, which is the Endless Light through the forming of the four worlds and the system of the Ten Sefirot.

The Holy Ari explains the process before the Big Bang. The Creator, Blessed be He, raised a ‘desire’ to create a place to build a special ‘home’ for his created beings. A place with a spiritual system that is an extension of him. In this place he would build physical worlds and to bestow on his special beings the ability to control their environment and be like him.

Before Creation there was only simple light that filled all of existence. Since we cannot define it or know anything about it we call it the Endless, Blessed be He.
To create this “place” “המקום”, the Endless light distanced himself (its light) from a middle point, equally to all directions. This process created an empty sphere “חלל ריק”
The ‘emptiness’ of this space was not void of light but it was a state where the light was concealed in a system and a process. To understand this principle we should look at the sun as a source of Light. We cannot come too close or look at it directly. Its light cannot be seen in space but we know that it exists everywhere and is reflected from anything that comes under its light.

The creation of the empty space is called ‘Tzimtzum’ and the literal meaning of this word is ‘reduction’ or ‘restriction’. The Endless light reduced its presence in the sphere to make a place where his forces could be revealed through the system of the Ten Sefirot.
The light that moved out of the sphere created a state of darkness that is the root of the forces of lack and judgment. The lack of light also created something that was never there before–the vessel.

When we have something and lose it, we experience a lack that creates a vessel. The vessel is the expression of the desire to restore the light that was in it before.

The benefit of this aspect of Creation is that now, we can have desires and a driving force to fulfill our vessels.

Genesis 1:31
“וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים אֶת-כָּל-אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה”
“And God saw everything that he had made…”

The Hebrew word “וַיַּרְא” “and saw” has the numerical value of 217. It is the combination of ‘light’ אור (n. 207) and י (n.10) that represent the 10 Sefirot and the vessel.
