Zohar Chaye Sarah

Genesis 23:1
“וַיִּהְיוּ חַיֵּי שָׂרָה, מֵאָה שָׁנָה וְעֶשְׂרִים שָׁנָה וְשֶׁבַע שָׁנִים–שְׁנֵי, חַיֵּי שָׂרָה”
“And the life of Sarah were one hundred year and twenty year and seven years; these were the two lives of Sarah.”

The word ‘וַיִּהְיוּ’, ‘and they were’ (related to the life of Sarah), has numerical value of 37. Sarah died when Isaac was put on the altar by his father when he was 37 years old.

Genesis 23:2
“וַתָּמָת שָׂרָה, בְּקִרְיַת אַרְבַּע הִוא חֶבְרוֹן–בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן; וַיָּבֹא, אַבְרָהָם, לִסְפֹּד לְשָׂרָה, וְלִבְכֹּתָהּ”
“Sarah died in Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan; and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.”

The Zohar explains that “Abraham came”, means he came from the mount of Moriah, where he took Isaac for binding. That’s how we know that Sarah died when he was there.

Before telling us that Sarah died, the Torah tells us about her life. We learn that the life of the person unfolds before he dies. Sarah’s life was described in a way that honored her more than any other women in the Torah.

The sages tell us that the Satan told Sarah that Isaac died because Abraham took him for sacrifice on the mount Moriah. The sorrow caused her soul to leave her body. The song “אשת חיל”, “Woman of Valor”, that comes from Proverbs 31:10-31 which we sing on Friday nights, is attributed to Abraham. The sages say that it was a eulogy for his wife.

Sarah is the mother, the matriarch, of the Israelites. She brought to life the first child into the covenant of God with Abraham. Isaac brought Jacob, who is Israel, and from him came all the children of Israel.

When we pray or meditate for the healing of a person we mention the name of his/her mother. When that name is unknown we use instead the name Sarah, because all the children of Israel connect to her.
May all the sick be healed by the merits and Life of Sarah Imenu (‘our mother’).
