Leviticus 21:17
“דַּבֵּר אֶל-אַהֲרֹן, לֵאמֹר: אִישׁ מִזַּרְעֲךָ לְדֹרֹתָם, אֲשֶׁר יִהְיֶה בוֹ מוּם–לֹא יִקְרַב, לְהַקְרִיב לֶחֶם אֱלֹהָיו”
“”Speak to Aaron, saying, ‘No man of your offspring throughout their generations who has a defect shall approach to offer the food of his God.”
God tells Moses to speak to Aaron and explains that the rule of purity for the priests is for all generations. A son of a priest that was born with some kind of defect can not serve in the Holy and channel Light to the world. A priest must be complete in body and faith (soul) in order to serve properly. The Zohar explains that the ‘defect’ testifies that the person’s faith is flawed.
The physical defect reflects a spiritual state from previous lives. A complete faith and connection to the Light would result is a soul full of Light and the body that the soul is dressed with would be complete.
To understand it better, imagine that the soul is the ‘skeleton’ that the body forms on it. If the soul is not properly corrected it would carry the spiritual flaws into the next life, expressed in physical limitations.
There is a known phenomena called “A phantom limb”, which is the sensation that an amputated or missing limb is still attached to the body. The soul is not a physical part that can be removed with a body part. When the soul leaves the body, meaning getting undressed from this ‘earthly’ garment, the lifeless body begins to disintegrate because the ‘skeleton’ and the life force is not longer present.
On the night of Hoshana Rabbah, which is the last day of the holiday of Sukkot, between midnight and dawn, we have a special opportunity to see the reflection of our souls in our shadow casted by the light of the moon. A pure Kabbalist would be able to see ‘holes’ or missing ‘limbs’ and if found we should make corrections before we leave the world.
We are the ‘priests’ of our lives and we should conduct our actions with purity in order to channel pure Light into our lives. The soul is fed by the faith (soul) attached to our actions (body). If we do negative actions we may connect to the impure side and bring flaws to our souls causing difficult correction process and or incomplete/flawed body.
The video below shows a short scene from a TV series ‘House MD’, where Dr. House tries (forcefully) to heal a stubborn veteran with a missing arm. The veteran had pain locked in his missing arm for years. In this clip we see how Dr. House ‘fix’ the problem and remove the pain from the person’s ‘phantom’ arm.
