Zohar Shelach Lecha
Numbers 13:22,23
“They went up into the Negeb and came to Hebron. Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.)”
“Then they came to the valley of Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men, with some of the pomegranates and of the figs.”
The Zohar reveals that Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai were descendants of the ‘Nefilim’ ‘נפילים’. The Nefilim were angels that God casted down to earth when they protested his plan to create a man (Adam) with ability to control them.
The Zohar puts the Nefilim at the level of Chokmah of the Klipot. When they fell to the material world they dressed with a big physical body. They practice witchcraft and all kind of magic.
Ten of the spies Moses sent to ‘tour’ the Land, feared the local giants and came back with a message of discouragement. Rashi in his commentary to this verse explains that to prove their fears from the giants of the land, eight of them carried a huge cluster of grapes. One of the other two carried a fig and the other one carried a pomegranate.
Following this story, the Zohar changes the subject and tells about the power of studying the Torah. We learned before that two of the spies didn’t have fears. Caleb connected to the patriarchs in Hebron and Joshua was blessed with a new name from Moses.
Lessons:
Before the Israelites came to the Land, it was occupied by seven negative forces of the Klipot. They had to conquer their fears, put their certainty in God and step into the Holy and Promised Land.
Until the days of Mashiach we have to overcome all kinds of obstacles. God shows us the path, gave us the Torah and if we connect to it with certainty, especially with support of the Tzadikim, we can get safely into the ‘Promised Land’.
