Zohar Vayetze
#44
Rabbi Shimon heard from his student, Rabbi Yitzhak, about the study they had previously from the children of Rabbi Tzadok, who was called ‘the weak’.
Rabbi Shimon continued to explain the he was called ‘weak’ because he fasted for 40 years with a prayer that the Holy Temple in Jerusalem won;t be destroyed during his lifetime.
Rabbi Tzadok was explaining deep secrets on every word in the Torah. His studies gave the people of the world a righteous path to follow.
After sometime Rabbi Yitzchak met rabbi Tzadok and his young son. He asked about his other son and Rabbi Tzadok answered that he got married and with his wife. He explained that he didn’t invite his to the wedding because he didn’t know him before, nor have knowledge about his spiritual level to know how to honor him. Another reason is that may be rabbi Yitzchak is busy and he didn’t want to put additional burden on him. Third reason is that the friends that dine on the bride and groom table give them generous presents.
Rabbi Yitzchak respected that and blessed him.
Lesson:
The wedding is the aspect of unification of light and vessel through studying (dining) the secrets of the Torah. Rabbi Yitzchak wasn’t invited to Rabbi Tzadok special studies because he didn’t know how much he can contribute to the studies, which is the aspect of giving ‘generous presents’.
Rabbi Yitzchak asked to his name and he answered ‘Tzadok the small’. At that time Rabbi Yitzchak learned from him 13 high level secrets from the Torah. From his son he learned three secrets, one related to prophecy, one related to dreams and one about the difference between them.
Lesson: Even though Rabbi Tzadok was a great Tzadik, he presented himself simply by stating his name and adding ‘small’ to show how little he thinks of himself. The Zohar teaches us that those who are small in this world are big in the spiritual level. In this world most people take pride of their intelligence and social status. Only when studying and conducting life without ego, we can achieve greater spiritual levels.
