Zohar Balak

#161
Numbers 31:8
“וְאֶת מַלְכֵי מִדְיָן הָרְגוּ עַל חַלְלֵיהֶם אֶת אֱוִי וְאֶת רֶקֶם וְאֶת צוּר וְאֶת חוּר וְאֶת רֶבַע חֲמֵשֶׁת מַלְכֵי מִדְיָן וְאֵת בִּלְעָם בֶּן בְּעוֹר הָרְגוּ בֶּחָרֶב.”
“They killed the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian. And they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.”

Rabbi Elazar discuss the death of Balaam and who killed him. Rabbi Yitzchak said that Pinchas and twelve thousand warriors of Israel came to take revenge on Midian. Balaam and the kings of Midian made magic and could fly in the air trying to escape Pinchas and his people.
Pinchas had the priestly crown (Tzitz, ציץ) with him and with his prayer, he could bring down Balaam with the kings of Moab and Midian and kill them.

#162
Rabbi Shimon ads that everything related to Balaam is on the difficult side.
Deuteronomy 34:10
“וְלֹא קָם נָבִיא עוֹד בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל כְּמֹשֶׁה אֲשֶׁר יְדָעוֹ יְהוָה פָּנִים אֶל פָּנִים.”
“And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom YHVH knew face to face,”
Moses was on the level of Da’at that is the highest spiritual level among the nation of Israel. Balaam was also on the level of Da’at among the other nations. Moses was on the pure side, connecting to the supernal Keter and Balaam was on the left, strongly connected to the impure side. Balaam praised himself to have great wisdom and abilities.
Numbers 23:15
“וַיֹּאמֶר אֶל בָּלָק הִתְיַצֵּב כֹּה עַל עֹלָתֶךָ וְאָנֹכִי אִקָּרֶה כֹּה.”
“And he said to Balak, “Stand here beside your burnt offering while I myself meet YHVH over there.””
Rabbi Shimon explains that when Balaam said these words to Balak, he believed that he can control Malchut and disconnect the Shechina from Malchut. The question is how they could kill him, when Balaam was so strong.

Lesson;
At the beginning of Numbers 31, God tells Moses to take revenge on Midian before he passes away. Then Moses ask the nation to send 1000 men from each tribe for this mission. God didn’t like that Balaam, Moab and Midian came together to go against Israel with curse and women to drain the energy from his people and caused the death of 24000 of them.
In Genesis 27:29 we read that Jacob was blessed with “Cursed be those who curse you, And blessed be those who bless you.”. Since Balaam and the kings of Moab and Midian came to curse and hurt the children of Jacob, who is Israel, they had to be punished. Moses appointed Pinchas to join the warriors of Israel with Holy tools because it was a holy war to remove evil from the world.

Those who go against Israel should know that God is ready to protect his people and turn the hate toward them. The Israelites are his people because they have the tools to bring light to the whole world.
