After making Aliyah and arriving in Ottoman Jerusalem, in 1824 the rabbi was sent to Constantinople by the head of the Perushim of Jerusalem, and succeeded in procuring a royal firman, commanding the kadi of Jerusalem to enforce the declaration of debt annualization concerning the Ashkenazi Jewish community of Jerusalem. With the annexation of Jerusalem by Muhammad Ali of Egypt in 1831, a window of opportunity arose for the Perushim. On 23 June 1836, after traveling to Egypt, rabbi Zoref, together with the backing of the Austrian and Russian consuls in Alexandria, obtained the long-awaited firman for the reconstruction of the Hurva Synagogue. Zoref became deeply engaged with Jewish lands seized by the creditors in Jerusalem and appeased the Arabs with annual bribes, but at some point the arrangement ceased and they tried to kill him. One night he was shot at by an unknown assailant who missed but later drowned after falling into a cistern. On a second occasion he was attacked on his way to prayers early one morning.  textרבי אברהם שלמה זלמן צורף (הראש"ז) (תקמ"ו 1786 - י"ט באלול ה'תרי"א 16 בספטמבר 1851), נמנה עם מחדשי היישוב האשכנזי בירושלים בראשית המאה ה-19. בשנת 1836 הוא השיג את רשות שליט הארץ לחדש את ההתיישבות של יהדות אשכנז בירושלים: בניית בית הכנסת החורבה ומתן פטור מהחוב שחל על בני העדה הותקף על רקע לאומני ומת ב-1851, כמה חודשים מאוחר יותר. צורף נחשב לנפגע פעולות האיבה הראשון. נכדו, הרב יואל משה סלומון, היה ממייסדי פתח תקווה. נינו, חיים סלומון, היה ממייסדי חברת התרופות "סלומון לוין ואלשטיין" שממנה התפתחה חברת התרופות "טבע". <h3 style="text-align: right;">תולדות חייו</h3> רבי אברהם שלמה זלמן צורף נולד בעיר קיידאן שבליטא לאביו יעקב. בילדותו למד תורה עם אחד מתלמידי הגר"א וממנו ספג את השאיפה לקיים את מצוות יישוב ארץ ישראל. במאי 1811 יצא עם אשתו ושלושת ילדיו בעליית תלמידי הגר"א לעלות לארץ ישראל. בהושענא רבה תקע"ב (אוקטובר 1811) הגיעה המשפחה לחופי ארץ ישראל, והשתקעה בעיר עכו במשך כמה חודשים. בהמשך עקרה המשפחה לצפת, שם ביקש צורף להשתלב בהווי המקומי: הוא פתח חנות לצורפות, החליף את לבושו לבגדים המקובלים על יהודי ספרד, ולמד את השפה הערבית. בשנת 1816 עלה לירושלים, בעלייה שבראשה עמד רבי מנחם מנדל משקלוב. באותה תקופה הייתה ירושלים סגורה בפני עליית יהודים אשכנזים, בגלל חוב ישן של רבי יהודה החסיד. צורף ומשפחתו נכנסו לעיר בהתחפשות לחזות של יוצאי ספרד. בבואו לירושלים פתח חנות לצורפות, ממנה קיבל את הכינוי "צורף". עם זאת, יש משערים ששם המשפחה צורף הגיע אליו מאבותיו, וכי הוא נכדו של רבי העשיל צורף, מקובל החשוד בשבתאות שפעל בווילנה. באותן השנים נהג לצאת לחו"ל בתור שד"ר על מנת לאסוף תרומות לטובת היישוב הספרדי בירושלים. היו שהתנכלו לו וכאשר הגיע לאחד הקהילות באיטליה חשדו בו ראשי הקהילה כי הוא מתחזה. כאשר עמדו על הטעות התנצלו לפניו ושמו התפרסם בקהילות איטליה. באותן שנים היה בקשר קרוב עם הרב יהודה ביבאס ואף פעל למען מינויו לרבה הספרדי של אמסטרדם, דבר שלא צלח לבסוף. הצלחתו בגיוס התרומות הביאה לכך שייזום תוכנית לשיקום שטח בית הכנסת "חורבת רבי יהודה החסיד" והפיכתו למרכז יישוב יהודי. ואכן בשנת 1836 יצא למצרים ובעזרת הקונסולים של רוסיה ואוסטריה קיבל פירמאן (צו מלכותי) ממוחמד עלי באשא, שליט מצרים (ששלט באותה עת בארץ ישראל), אשר ציווה "כי הרשות בידי העדה האשכנזית להקים את "דיר שיכנז", דהיינו:"חצר האשכנזים", (לימים "החורבה" וסביבותיה), ולבנות בתוכה מעונות ואסר לתבוע מהם את חובות אבותיהם". רבי יהוסף שווארץ בספרו "תבואות הארץ" כותב: "ביום י"ט אלול התחלנו לפנות האשפה והזבל ויחלו לבנות. עד פרשת וארא תקצ"ז נגמר בית המדרש וכבר יכולנו להתפלל בו ונחנכה ביום ההוא בשמחה גדולה: ברוך מציב גבולות אלמנה, ויקרא את שמו "מנחם ציון" או בפי העם "בית המדרש הישן". ויבנו עוד כל הבניינים והבתים הנחרבים והנהרים אשר בכל החצר הגדול הזה". כך היו במרכז של העדה האשכנזית מושב לבית דין צדק, תלמוד תורה לנערים וישיבה. השלמת הבנייה עוררה מורת רוח בקרב תושבי ירושלים הערבים, והם חיפשו דרכים לנקום בו. כל זמן שהיה הממונה היחיד על כספי החורבה, דאג להעביר כספים למנהיגי הערבים "למען השלום". אולם כאשר גדל היישוב, וקמו מנהיגים וממונים חדשים, נאלץ לחדול מלתת שלמונים לערבים. דבר זה הקים נגדו אויבים רבים. פעמיים ניסו להתנקש בחייו: בפעם הראשונה ירה בו ערבי, אך החטיא את המטרה. היורה נמצא למחרת טבוע בבור. בפעם השנייה, בדרכו אל בית הכנסת "מנחם ציון" להתפלל תפילת ותיקין, התנפלו עליו מספר ערבים, והיכוהו בחרב בראשו. החרב פגעה במוחו וגרמה לו לאובדן זיכרון ושיתוק. צורף שרד את הפגיעה במשך עשרה חודשים, אך לבסוף גסס. ביומו האחרון קרא לכל בני משפחתו, וביקש להדליק נרות ולהכין כיסאות לאורחים הרבים והחשובים שיבואו לבקרו. אז שאל לשלום כל אחד מבני משפחתו וכך "יצאה נשמתו היפה, האמיצה, המסורה לעיר קדשו, בחברת בני ביתו הנאהבים והנעימים". נפטר בי"ט באלול ה'תרי"א (1851). פרנסי העדה הספרדית, הממונים על בית הקברות, סירבו להביאו למנוחת עולמים עד שישולם חובו מימי היותו שד"ר. רק לאחר פנייתו של רבי שמואל סלנט, רבה של העדה האשכנזית, אל החכם באשי, הושגה לו אחוזת קבר ליד קבר זכריה בהר הזיתים. חלקה זו נחפרה בידי ארכאולוגים בשנת 1960, וכל הקברים שבה הוסרו. שמו של צורף ושל הרב משה בידרמן נכתבו על הקיר בסמוך למקום שבו היו קבריהם, ובשנת 2010 הוצבו במקום מצבות חדשות הנושאות את שמם של בני הזוג צורף. צורף מוזכר כנרצח הטרור הראשון בארץ ישראל בעת החדשה ומונצח בלוח מספר אחת בהר הרצל. זכותו תגן עלינו ועל כל ישראל, אמן
