Azulai refers to him as a miracle-worker. Alnaqua succeeded, after all, other physicians had failed, in curing the only daughter of a king of the Zayyanid dynasty. Refusing the reward of gold and silver offered him by the king, he begged only that the Jews living near Tlemçen might be united in it. In this way, the community was formed. Alnaqua's first care was to establish a large synagogue: this is still in existence and bears his name. Above the rabbi's chair, on which the verse Jer. xvii.12 is engraved, a lamp burns perpetually. Alnaqua's grave, surrounded by those of his family, is in the old cemetery: it is sacred to North African Jews and is frequently visited by pilgrims from all Algeria.</p> <p>Alnaqua had two sons, Israel and Judah. The latter lived at Oran, Mostaganem, and, later, at Tlemçen, and became the father-in-law of Simeon ben Zemah Duran. Alnaqua wrote for his elder son Israel Shaar Kevod Adonai (Entrance to the Glory of God), containing answers to the criticisms of Nahmanides on the Moreh of Maimonides. Manuscripts of this work exist in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. He wrote, also, some hymns.</p> <p>May the merit of the tzadik Rabbi Ephraim ben Israel Alnaqua protect us all. Amen</p>

      • text<p style="text-align:right">רבי אפרים אנקווה (ה'קי"ד - ה'ר"ב; 1354–1442) היה רב, רופא ופילוסוף, מגדולי חכמי ספרד באלג'יריה במאה ה-14. התפרסם כצדיק ובעל מופתים, וקברו משמש עד היום כמוקד עלייה לרגל לרבים מיהודי צפון אפריקה.</p> <h3 style="text-align:right">קורות חיים</h3> <p style="text-align:right">נולד בשנת 1354 (ה'קי"ד) בעיר טולדו שבספרד לאביו הרב ישראל אנקווה בעל ספר מנורת המאור שעלה על המוקד בעת גזרות קנ"א (1391) וספר תורה בידו.</p> <p style="text-align:right">בגיל צעיר נשלח ללמוד אצל רבנו נסים גירונדי (הר"ן), הנחשב גם לרבם של גדולי ראשוני אלג'יריה בני דורו, הריב"ש והרשב"ץ.</p> <p style="text-align:right">בשנת 1391 נערכו פוגרומים רבים נגד קהילות היהודים בספרד. במהלך הרדיפות, הידועות בשם גזירות קנ"א, הרגו נוצרים אלפי יהודים בכל רחבי המדינה, שרפו את בתיהם והחריבו את קהילותיהם. הנוצרים העמידו את היהודים בפני הברירה של להתנצר או למות. על רקע רדיפות אלו ברח רבי אפרים ממדינתו כמו רבים מבני קהילת ספרד. מאז היה שרוי באבל וקיבל על עצמו סיגופים רבים ואורח חיים של פרישות בשל החורבן הגדול "אשר כמוה לא נהייתה מאז גלו שם".</p> <p style="text-align:right">לאחר שנתיים של נדודים הגיע לעיר מרכש שבמרוקו (בשנת 1393), שם כיבדוהו במסירת דרשות, ואחרי שהות קצרה בעיר המשיך לעיירה בשם הונין, בה התבקש לשמש כדיין ומורה צדק. בהמשך החליט לעזוב את הונין ולהמשיך במסעו לעיר אחרת באלג'יריה: תלמסאן.</p> <p style="text-align:right">בעיר זו התמנה רבי אפרים לרב ודיין, תפקידים אותם מילא במשך קרוב לארבעים שנה עד פטירתו. בבית דינו ישבו בין השאר הרב ישועה הלוי[2] בעל ספר הליכות עולם. עד מהרה הוא התפרסם בכל רחבי אלג'יריה והפנו אליו שאלות הלכתיות ואחרות. בשל השפעתו הרבה כינוהו בני דורו בתואר "הרב" סתם, כינוי שנשאר במשך דורות רבים באלג'יריה.</p> <p style="text-align:right">עם זאת, בניגוד לחכמים ספרדים אחרים שהיגרו לאלג'יריה בעת הגזירות, כמו הריב"ש והרשב"ץ, לא תמיד קיבלו בני המקום את פסקיו והוא נאלץ להתמודד עם הפרעות והטרדות מצד חכמים בני המקום שהיו ברמה תורנית נמוכה יחסית, וחלקו על פסיקותיו ברבים. במקרה אחד, הידוע בשם "היבמה מתאזה", התיר רבי אפרים אישה אחת להתייבם, והדבר גרר פולמוס ארוך וחריף בין חכמי הדור. אחד מהם שלח לרשב"ץ מכתב בו הוא מבקר בחריפות את ההיתר שהעניק רבי אפרים, ובתגובה שלח רבי אפרים לרשב"ץ מכתב בו הוא משיב על הטענות ומצדיק את דבריו. מלבד זאת הוא מתאונן על כך שהוציאו עליו דיבה כלשונו, ועל כך שהיא התקבלה על ידי אנשים מבלי לבדוק את העובדות לאשורן. בתשובתו זו הוא תוקף בחריפות את אותם מורי הוראות שאינם ראויים ו"לא הגיעו להוראה".</p> <p style="text-align:right">הרב אנקווה הקים מוסדות דת ובתי דין רבניים בעיר. בית הכנסת על שמו היה בית כנסת מפורסם בכל אלג'יריה והוא קיים עד היום.</p> <h3 style="text-align:right">בעל מופתים</h3> <p style="text-align:right">מלבד השפעתו ההלכתית, נודע רבי אפרים בשל מעשי נסים רבים שיוחסו לו ואשר מלווים את יהודי ויוצאי העיר תלמסאן עד היום. אגדה מפורסמת מספרת על דרך הגעתו לעירו תלמסאן. על פי המסורת, יצא רבי אפרים עם שיירה נכרית מהעיר הונין, ובעת שהגיע יום השבת סירב להמשיך עמם בדרכם ולחלל את היום. כך הוכרח הרב לשהות ביום השבת בלב היער, בין טורפים ושודדים. בכניסת השבת החל הרב באמירת התפילה, ובה בעת זינק לעברו אריה. הרב צעק 'שמע ישראל', ובשומעו את צעקתו, "קרב האריה בצעדים מדודים ובא לשכב לצידו, ככלב השוכב ליד אדונו". בצאת השבת, כאשר התכונן להמשיך בדרכו התרחש על פי המסורת אירוע מופתי נוסף, כאשר נחש חסם את דרכו של הרב, עד אשר האריה אחז בנחש בשיניו מבלי לפגוע בו. מכאן הציור המפורסם של הרב אפרים אנקאווה, רוכב על האריה ובפיו נחש המשמש אותו כמושכות. על פי מסורת עתיקה כך נכנס הרב לעיר תלמסאן. סמל זה ליווה את תושבי העיר ובניה של משפחת אנקאווה כמדליון המשפחה בכל מקום בו התגוררו, באלג'יריה או במרוקו.</p> <p style="text-align:right">מקרה נוסף חיזק את אהדתם של בני תלמסאן לרבם. עד בואו לעיר נאסר על יהודי תלמסאן ללון בין כותליה. המסורת מספרת שלאחר שהצליח לרפא את בתו של שליט המקום ממחלה חשוכת מרפא הותרו יהודי המקום ללון בעיר.</p> <h3 style="text-align:right">התמחותו ברפואה</h3> <p style="text-align:right">הרב אנקווה, כדרכם של הרמב"ם והרשב"ץ בן דורו, למד רפואה ואף שימש כרופאו האישי של שליט העיר תלמסאן. פרופ' נוח עמינוח מוכיח על פי עדויות היסטוריות שאף התמצא בשיטות ובמחקר רפואי להקלת כאבי החולים, וכן העמיק בהבנת הסיבות המביאות להקדמה ולזירוז של הופעת סימני הזקנה אצל בני אדם. כמו הרמב"ם, אף הוא סבר ששורש סיבות הכאב אינו רק פיזיולוגי, אלא אף פסיכולוגי או פסיכוסומטי. לדעת הרב אנקווה, הסניליות היא תהליך שניתן להילחם בו ולעכבו בעזרת תזונה נכונה ופעילות שכלית קוגניטיבית מאומצת.</p> <h3 style="text-align:right">כתיבתו הפיוטית</h3> <p style="text-align:right">הרב אפרים אנקאווה הרבה לעסוק בכתיבה פיוטית, ושני פיוטים שכתב "אלה מהימן די ברא זמן" אשר נכתב בארמית, והפיוט "אדון עולם אשר נעלית", נכנסו למחזור התפילה ליום הכיפורים של יהודי אלג'יר. בספר "יבין ושמועה" נמצא מכתב שכתב לרשב"ץ, והוא פותח אליו בדברי שיר ומליצה.</p> <p style="text-align:right">מעניין במיוחד שירו הנדיר בשם 'אזעק מר ואקונן' שכתבו אחר שראה בחלום שימות באותה שנה. המחבר מנסח עוד בחייו מעין קינה על מותו, וחותם בו בחתימתו "אפרים נע". בפיוט שולח הרב אנקאווה תוכחה מגולה לאדם "באשר הוא אדם וחוטא". ומתאר את מלאך המוות כבוגד ושודד. בין השורות הוא מגנה את מידת הכעס השולטת על בני האדם ברוב ימיהם בעולם הזה.</p> <p style="text-align:right">בשתי המחרוזות האחרונות הוא מתאר איך נפרד מן העולם בריצה אל 'צרור החיים' ו'עולם זיו השכינה': "נַדְתִּי מֵעוֹלַמְכֶם, עוֹלַם הַכּוֹכָבִים. אֲשֶׁר עִנְיָנָיו כַּעַס, וְכָל יָמָיו מַכְאוֹבִים. וְרַצְתִּי לִצְרוֹר חַיִּים, כֻּלָּם אֲרוּכִים וְטוֹבִים. לְעוֹלַם זִיו הַשְּׁכִינָה, אֲשֶׁר כָּל יָמָיו עֲרֵבִים."</p> <h3 style="text-align:right">שאלת תאריך פטירתו</h3> <p style="text-align:right">שאלת תאריך פטירתו של הרב אנקווה נותרה מעורפלת והיא מוטלת בספק גם בקרב החוקרים וההיסטוריונים.</p> <p style="text-align:right">לדעת רבי אברהם גבישון מחבר ספר "עומר השכחה", הוא נפטר ביום א' בחודש כסלו בשנת ה'ר"ב (1442), ומשום כך כינו את הרב אפרים אנקאווה בכינוי "הרב" סתם, לרמוז את גימטריית תאריך פטירתו בשנת 202 לאלף החמישי.</p> <p style="text-align:right">לעומתו נוח עמינוח בכמה ממחקריו מנסה להוכיח שעל פי הדגשת אותיות מסוימות בפסוק שבחר הרב גבישון לפתח ספרו, יש לומר שהרב אנקאווה נפטר דווקא בשנת ה'ר"ח (1448).</p> <p style="text-align:right">הרב זכריה זרמתי "בקיצור תולדת הרב אנקאווה" מעיד על מסורת עתיקת יומין בקרב יוצאי העיר תלמסאן בכך שאי הוודאות בתאריך פטירתו היא זו שחזקה את האמונה בנצחיותו של הרב ומשום כך נהגו להכריז בעירו "עוד אבינו אפרים חי".</p> <h3 style="text-align:right">עליה לרגל והילולות על קברו</h3> <p style="text-align:right">הרב אפרים אנקאווה הוא אחת הדמויות הנערצות ביותר על יהודי צפון אפריקה כולם, הן בקהילות מרוקו, אלג'יריה ואף בערי תוניסיה. רבים מהם מקיימים עד היום את ההילולה שלו בר"ח כסלו ומזכירים גם את זכרו ביום ל"ג בעומר, יחד עם התנא רבי שמעון בר יוחאי.</p> <p style="text-align:right">מיום פטירתו הפך קברו למקום קדוש עבור יהודים ומוסלמים כאחד. עד עזיבת יהודי אלג'יריה בשנת 1962 הייתה מסורת מושרשת של עלייה לרגל למקום קבורתו תוך עריכת תפילות והילולות. אף בימינו נחשב המקום כקדוש עבור תושבי המקום המוסלמים, השומרים עליו ועל כניסתו בחרדת קודש.</p> <p style="text-align:right">הרב יוסף משאש, שהיה לימים רבה של העיר תלמסאן, מזכיר בספרו "אוצר המכתבים" שעל פי המסורת, מקום קבורתו של הרב שימש את הצדיק עוד בחייו להתבודדותו. בכניסתו נמצא מעיין בו נהג הרב לטבול. מספרים שהעולים לרגל לציון הקדוש, נהגו אף הם לטבול לטהרה באותו מקווה לפני גישה אל הציון ושהמוסלמים נהגו להסיר את נעליהם בפתח הקבר.</p> <p style="text-align:right"><br /> כתביו</p> <p style="text-align:right">ספרו היחיד אשר בידינו "שער כבוד ה'", חובר בתשובה לשאלת בנו רבי ישראל אנקווה. בספר משלב המחבר פילוסופיה יהודית, קבלה ותאולוגיה ומגלה בקיאות מעמיקה בתרגום אונקלוס. הספר מציג באופן שיטתי תשובות וישובים להשגות הרמב"ן בספר "שער הגמול", על דברי הרמב"ם בספרו מורה הנבוכים. גיליונות הספר נשארו שנים רבות ככתבי יד עלומים אשר הועתקו על ידי יחידי סגולה, במשך הדורות, והמקובל רבי חיים ויטאל מעיד שהספר וטיעוניו העיקריים היו שגורים בפיהם של גדולי מקובלי צפת</p> <p style="text-align:right">הן רבי חיים בלייח, רבה של עיר תלמסאן ומחבר המבוא לספר, והן מאוחר יותר הרב אליהו עצור טוענים שספר "שער כבוד ה'" אינו ספרו היחיד של הרב אנקאווה. ככל הנראה רבים מכתביו ותשובותיו אבדו עם השנים, או לא נדפסו מעולם. כך גם סבור נוח עמינוח אשר מעלה גם את ההשערה כי חלק מן השאלות שנשלחו מהעיר תלמסאן אל הרשב"ץ באלג'יר, ותשובותיהן שהופנו בחזרה לשואל אנונימי, לא היו יכולות להישאל אלא רק מפי הרב אפרים אנקאווה בלבד. ברוח זו, לדעת שמחה אסף יש לייחס לרבנו את החיבור 'פירוש התורה דרבנו אפרים', אך שרבים מפקפקים בעובדה זו. לפי השערת החוקר שמחה אסף יש לייחס לרב אנקווה את החיבור 'פירוש התורה דרבנו אפרים', אך רבים מפקפקים בעובדה זו.</p> <p style="text-align:right">מלבד חיבורים אלו סבורים עמינוח והרב זכריה זרמתי שהרב אנקווה חיבר מאמרים נוספים שאבדו והן דנו בעניין בית המקדש ותפקידם של הכוהנים בכלל ושל הכהן הגדול בפרט.</p> <p
