Ḥayyim Mordecai was at first rabbi at Brestitzki, and later became rabbi in Great Dubno, where he established a printing-office. He was among those who elected the three deputies sent to St. Petersburg to confer with the government upon Jewish affairs, and was the author of Sha'are Teshubah (Gates of Repentance) a commentary to Shulḥan 'Aruk; it contains extracts from other works and appears in most editions of the Shulḥan 'Aruk. He died at Dunajowce in 1818. May the merit of Rabbi Hayyim Mordecai Margolioth protect us all. Amen

 textהרב חיים מרדכי מרגליות (בסביבות תק"מ, 1780-ט"ו בשבט תקפ"ג 1823), היה רב בדובנו, מחבר שערי תשובה על השולחן ערוך. <h3 style="text-align: right;">קורות חיו</h3> נולד לרב מנחם מאניש מרגליות, אב"ד ויטקוב, דינוביץ', לכוביץ וגריידינג. אחיו היה הרב אפרים זלמן מרגליות. למד אצל דודו הרב אלכסנדר סנדר מרגליות. נשא את בת אחיו ר' אליקים גציל פשקס מרגליות שהיה מחכמי הקלויז בברודי והצטרף ללימוד בקלויז. בתק"ס מונה כראב"ד ברסטצ'קה (ביסטריצקי) ואחר כך עבר לכהן כרב של קהילת דובנו שבה יסד בית דפוס. <h3 style="text-align: right;">שערי תשובה</h3> הוא תכנן להדפיס מהדורה חדשה של שולחן ערוך עם החיבור באר היטב שמלקט את פסקי האחרונים שקמו מאז כתיבת השו"ע עד ימיו, חיבור משלו בשם "שערי תשובה" המביא את דברי הפוסקים שלא הובאו ב"באר היטב" כולל רבים מחכמי הספרדים, והגהותיו של אחיו ר' אפרים זלמן לשו"ע בשם "יד אפרים". יש אומרים שאחיו סייע לו בכתיבת חיבורו כפי שרואים במספר מקומות בחיבור שמפנה ל"יד אפרים" הכרך הראשון של שולחן ערוך אורח חיים, עם שערי תשובה נדפס לראשונה בדובנא בשנת תק"פ. בהקדמות שנכתבו על ידי המחבר ואחיו, נראה שמדובר בחיבור שאמור היה לכלול את כל ארבעת חלקי השולחן ערוך. אולם בסופו של דבר יצא לאור שערי תשובה על חלק אורח חיים בלבד. בהקדמה לפתחי תשובה על יורה דעה, כותב המחבר כי הגאון הרב חיים מרדכי לא הספיק להשלים את החיבור על שאר חלקי השו"ע "כי לקח אותו אלוקים ואיננו". מסופר כי באמצע ההדפסה פרצה שרפה בבית הדפוס שכילתה הרבה מהציוד והספרים. ר' חיים מרדכי שקיווה לשלם את חובותיו ממכירת הספרים, עזב את דובנא בלב שבור ועם חובות גדולים ושב לברודי שבה נפטר בשנת תקפ"ג. לאחר פטירתו, המשיך אחיו את ההדפסה על חלק אור החיים, שהושלם בשנת תקפ"ה (1825). ה"שערי תשובה" מודפס ברוב המהדורות של שו"ע או"ח, כולל במהדורות עם המשנה ברורה. סבו היה ר' מרדכי מרגליות שנפטר בגיל צעיר מאוד, ייתכן שהוא נקרא על שמו, בתוספת השם חיים, כנהוג להוסיף שם, בקריאה על שמו של אדם שנפטר בצעירותו. כרב תיקן תקנות שונות לבני הקהילה. עסק במסחר כדי לא להתפרנס מהרבנות. השתתף בוועידות רבנים שונות שנערכו ברוסיה. זכותו תגן עלינו ועל כל ישראל, אמן
