  info<p>Rabbi Refael Shapiro (1837–1921) was the son of Rabbi Aryeh Leib Shapirofa, Rosh Yeshiva of the Volozhin yeshiva located in the town of Volozhin, Russia</p> <p>Rabbi Refael Shapiro (1837–1921) was the famed Rosh Yeshiva of the Volozhin yeshiva located in the town of Volozhin, Russia, (now Valozhyn, Belarus), and a son-in-law of Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin (the Netziv). After the Volozhin yeshiva was closed down in 1892 by order of the Russian government, he reopened it, albeit on a smaller scale in 1899. He was the father-in-law of Rabbi Chaim Soloveichik of Brisk, now in Belarus, and is known as the Toras Refael after his primary work.</p> <p>Rabbi Shapiro ordained Rabbi Isser Yehuda Unterman (who would eventually become one of Israel's chief rabbis) who studied in the Kollel of the Volozhin yeshiva before opening his own yeshiva in the neighboring town of Vishnyeva (Vishnevo, Belarus). Additionally, Rabbi Shapiro gave Semicha (rabbinical ordination) to Rabbi Moshe Shatzkes, known as the Łomża Rov, and Rabbi Meir Joshua Rosenberg.</p> <p>Rabbi Shapiro died on the 23rd of Adar in 1921.</p> <p>May the merit of the tzadik Rabbi Refael Shapiro protect us all.   text<h3 style="text-align: right;">תולדות חייו</h3> <p style="text-align: right;">נולד בחודש אדר תקצ"ז (1837), בעיר סמורגון, לרב אריה לייב שפירא, רבה של קובנה, הידוע בשם ר' ליבלי קובנר. בשנת תרי"ב (1852), בגיל חמש-עשרה, נלקח על ידי ר' נפתלי צבי יהודה ברלין, הנצי"ב, כחתן לבתו שרה רשא. בשנת תר"ל (1870) נתמנה למשרת משנה לראש הישיבה בישיבת וולוז'ין, לצד חמיו הנצי"ב, והחל בהגדת שיעורים בישיבה שלוש פעמים בשבוע. בשנת תרמ"א (1881) ויתר על משרתו לטובת חתנו רבי חיים סולובייצ'יק מבריסק ויצא לכהן ברבנות בקהילת נובואלכסנדרובסק שבליטא.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">בשנת תרמ"ו (1886) עבר לכהן ברבנות קהילת בוברויסק שברוסיה הלבנה כיום בלארוס. בשנת תרנ"ט (1899), עם פתיחתה מחדש של ישיבת וולוז'ין בהשתדלותם של נאמני הישיבה בווילנא ובמינסק ובהסכמת פרנסי וולוז'ין, הוזמן ר' רפאל לכהן כרב וראש ישיבת וולוז'ין, בדומה לכל ראשי ישיבת וולוז'ין. ר' רפאל טבע סיומת מיוחדת לצד חתימתו: "העובד עבודת התורה בוואלאזין". בשנת תרע"ה (1915), סמוך לפרוץ מלחמת העולם הראשונה, התפזרה הישיבה ור' רפאל עקר למינסק, בה נפטר בכ"ג באדר ב' תרפ"א (1921).</p> <h3 style="text-align: right;">שיטת לימודו</h3> <p style="text-align: right;">רבי רפאל שפירא הוא אבי שיטה לימודית ייחודית הידועה בשם "לשיטתיה", שילוב של חריפות בקיאותית ועמקות. שיטה זו מבקשת למצוא היקש בין הלכות שונות ודעות שונות של תנא, אמורא או פרשן תלמודי, ולהוכיח כי כל ההלכות והדעות האלו יש להן יסוד משותף וקירבה פנימית זו עם זו. מתוך גילוי המאפיין האחיד למקורות שונים של אותו מחבר, ניתן ליישב סתירות שהתגלעו בין מקורות אלו.</p> <h3 style="text-align: right;">עזבונו התורני</h3> <p style="text-align: right;">כבר בצעירותו, נטל רבי רפאל שפירא חלק בעבודתו של חותנו, ביאור העמק שאלה על שאילתות דרב אחאי גאון, כפי שכותב הנצי"ב אודותיו:<br /> וגם חתני הרב מ' רפאל בהגאון מהר"א ליב שפירא זצ"ל אב"ד דק"ק קאוונא, הוא יושב עמדי בחבורה/ כחו יפה בתורה/ ודעתו ברה/ להתיישב עמו בעמק הלכה ולבררה/ וגם הוא הוסיף כמה הגהות ברוב חקירה</p> <p style="text-align: right;"> </p> <p style="text-align: right;">מחידושיו הרבים נותר ספרו תורת רפאל וכמה יסודות למדניים המפורסמים בשמו. בכתיבת חידושיו ומכתביו נמנע ר' רפאל מלהשתמש בעט ברזל אלא בנוצה של עוף, משום חשש הלכתי של איסור 'לא תניף עליהם ברזל'. את היקף כתביו וגורלם מתארים בניו בעיצומה של השואה:</p> <p style="text-align: right;">אבינו הגאון זצ"ל... הניח אחריו ברכה הרבה כתבים חידושי תורתו בסוגיות התלמוד... ובמקצועות ההלכה... לכל חלקי השו"ע ותשובות להוראת הלכה למעשה, אף חידושים באגדה... ואחרי פרוץ המלחמה הועברו והובאו הכתבים ברוב עמל וסכנת דרך לעיר ווילנא... וכל הכתבים הרבים נשארו במדינת ליטא ומאוד הלב דוי וסוער על זה כי מי יודע מה גורלם בסערת המלחמה הזו.</p> <h3 style="text-align: right;">ספריו</h3> <p style="text-align: right;">תורת רפאל, חידושים בהלכה וביאורים בדברי התלמוד והפוסקים, ב' חלקים, לחלק אורח חיים, וחלק ג' אסופת תשובות וליקוטים, ירושלים תש"ג.</p> <h3 style="text-align: right;">צאצאיו</h3> <p style="text-align: right;">מאשתו הראשונה שרא רשא (בתו של הנצי"ב מוולוז'ין):</p> <p style="text-align: right;">יצחק שפירא</p> <p style="text-align: right;">ליפשא, אשת הרב חיים סולובייצ'יק מבריסק<br /> מאשתו השנייה דרייזל (אף היא בתו של הנצי"ב מוולוז'ין):</p> <p style="text-align: right;">הרב יעקב שפירא, ממלא מקום אביו בראשות ישיבת וולוז'ין. וראש הישיבה האחרון בוולוז'ין. שני בניו, יצחק משה וזלמן יוסף עסקו בסידור ועריכת כתבי סבם, הרב רפאל שפירא, ונספו בשואה.<br /> הרב אריה שפירא, אב"ד בביאליסטוק, ואביו של הרב משה שמואל שפירא ראש ישיבת באר יעקב.<br /> הרב ישראל איסר שפירא, רב בלאפיטש וראש ישיבת שערי תורה ביפו.<br /> בתו מירל, אשת הרב ישראל ריף, רבה של זאגר חדש בליטא.<br /> בניהם הרב נפתלי צבי יהודה ריף (רבה של קמדן בניו ג'רזי שבארצות הברית) והרב יצחק זונדל ריף (ראב"ד זאגר המאוחדת)<br /> שני בנים נפטרו בצעירותם: לוי, נפטר בוולוז'ין, ט' בניסן תרס"ד; ומנחם זונדל, נפטר בירושלים בד' בחשוון תרס"ח ונקבר בהר הזיתים.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">זכותו תגן עלינו ועל כל ישראל, אמן<br /> </p>
