    • info<p>Rabbi Joseph ben Menahem Mendel Steinhardt (ca. 1720–1776) was a German rabbi who lived in his early year in Schwabach, Bavaria. His first position as rabbi was as the rabbi of Rixheim, and shortly afterward he was elected chief rabbi of Upper Alsace. ln 1755 he was chosen chief rabbi of Nieder-Ehenheim in Lower Alsace, and eight years later was called as rabbi to Fürth, where he officiated until his death.</p> <p>Steinhardt was one of the foremost Talmudists of his time, and questions were addressed to him from Hungary, Italy (Verona), the Netherlands (Amsterdam), and Switzerland. He was very pious, and induced the lord of the manor of Nieder-Ehenheim to forbid men and women dancing together. His attitude in his controversy with rabbi Yeshaye Pick regarding Eleazar Kalir is also noteworthy, since he maintained that the word "Be-Rabbi" was not a second name, but merely an honorary title of Kalir's, who he claimed was a contemporary of Saadia.</p> <h3>Steinhardt was the author of the following works:</h3> <p>Zikron Yosef (Fürth, 1773), a work in four parts, containing responsa and decisions modeled on the ritual codices</p> <p>May the merit of the tzadik Rabbi Joseph ben Menahem Mendel Steinhardt protect us all.  Amen<br /> Mashbir Bar (Prague, 1827), comprising notes on the Pentateuch<br /> Koaḥ Shor (ib. 1827), containing novellæ on the treatise Baba Batra, with notes by his grandson Akiba</p> <p>May the merit of the tzadik Rabbi Joseph ben Menahem Mendel Steinhardt,  protect us all.       • notes<p style="text-align: right;">רבי יוסף שטיינהארט (ת"פ – כ"ב באב תקל"ו, 1776) היה רב ואב"ד בעיר פיורדא, פוסק משמעותי ורב השפעה, ונחשב מגדולי התורה הבולטים בתקופת האחרונים.</p> <h3 style="text-align: right;">ביוגרפיה</h3> <p style="text-align: right;">יוסף שטיינהארט נולד לרבי מנחם מענדל בשטיינהראט שבבוואריה, ולמד תורה אצל הרב יעקב פופרש כ"ץ בעל "שב יעקב", בפרנקפורט.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">היה בין חכמי התלמוד המובילים של זמנו, והתכתב עם כל גדולי הרבנים בזמנו, השאלות הופנו אליו מהונגריה, איטליה (ורונה), הולנד (אמסטרדם) ושווייץ.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">רבנותו הראשונה הייתה בעיר ריקסהיים. הוא כיהן גם ברבנות שוואבך, ורפלדסווילר.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">משנת תק"ט היה רב למדינת אלזאס העליונה שבירתה שטרסבורג.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">משנת תקט"ו היה רב למדינת אלזאס התחתונה בעיר נידרהיים.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">ומשנת תקכ"ג רב בפירט (עיר).</p> <p style="text-align: right;">נפטר בכ"ב מנחם אב תקל"ו, ונקבר בבית קברות הישן בפירט.</p> <h3 style="text-align: right;">משפחתו</h3> <p style="text-align: right;">היה נשוי שלוש פעמים: אשתו הראשונה הייתה חיה כהן שפירא, בתו של עקיבא כהן שפירא, השנייה רוזל, והשלישית קריינדל.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">הרב שטיינהארט מזכיר פעמים אחדות במהלך חיבורו את רעייתו הלמדנית קריינדל שגם הפצירה בו להדפיס את תורתו. קריינדל באה ממשפחת רבנים נודעת. אביה היה ר' אריה ליב מוכיח ברלין מפרשבורג (נפטר בשנת תק"ג, 1743), ואחיה הוא הרב ישעיה פיק ברלין.</p> <p style="text-align: right;">הרב שטיינהארט כתב בהקדמה לספרו כי נענש במידה רבה במותם של ילדיו ונכדיו, ועד כמה שידוע נשארו לו:</p> <p style="text-align: right;">בנו רבי משה (נפטר 1799) היה סופר ופרשן, חיבר פירוש על שער היחוד של תורת חובת הלבבות.<br /> בתו לאה, מאשתו הראשונה חיה. הייתה אשתו של הרב יצחק אהרון מפלסבורג.<br /> אחיינו היה מנחם מנדל שטיינהארט, שנולד לשמעון מהיינספורט וליטלה שהייתה אחותו.</p> <h3 style="text-align: right;">מתלמידיו</h3> <p style="text-align: right;">רבי מרדכי בנט<br /> רבי משה טוביה זונדהיימר רבה של הנאו.<br /> רבי וולף היידנהיים<br /> חיבוריו<br /> שו"ת זיכרון יוסף.<br /> משביר בר, על החומש.<br /> כח שור, על מסכת בבא בתרא.<br /> חיבוריו "משביר בר" ו"כח שור", התפרסמו אחר פטירתו על ידי נכדו הרב עקיבא שטיינהרט רבה של קובין שבהונגריה.<br /> זכותו תגן עלינו ועל כל ישראל, אמן</p>
