An authority on Halakha, he was consulted by rabbis from Turkey, Germany and Italy. He is known as the Panim Me'irot (or Punim Meirois in Yiddish) after his major work called Shu"t Panim Me'irot. He is also known as the Maharam Ash (or Maharam Esh) the Hebrew acronym for "Our Teacher, Rabbi Meir EisenStadt". <h3>Biography</h3> After serving as a dayan in Posen and rabbi in Szydłowiec, Poland, he went to Germany and settled in Worms where he headed the yeshiva. When Worms was taken by the French in 1701 he moved to Prostějov (German: Prossnitz) as rabbi. From 1711 to 1714 he returned to Szydłowiec but then moved to Eisenstadt (now in Austria) (adopting the name of the town) serving as rabbi of the Seven Communities. Eisenstadt greatly influenced the nature of the community and his yeshiva attracted students from far and near. His best known students are probably Jonathan Eybeschutz and Jeremiah Mattersdorf. <h3>Works</h3> Maharam Esh was the author of: "Or ha-Ganuz", novellae on marriage law (Ketubot) and notes on Yoreh De'ah. "Panim Me'irot", responsa and novellae on various Talmudic treatises. "Kotnot Or", homiletic commentary on the Pentateuch and the Five Scrolls, (published, with the "Or Chadash" of his grandson, Eliezer Kalir, under the title "Meore Esh" the latter word being an abbreviation of "Eisenstadt").

 text יש לציין כי גם רבי מאיר איזנשטטר כונה מהר"ם א"ש על שם עיר הולדתו, ואין לבלבל ביניהם הרב מאיר בן יצחק איזנשטט (מהר"ם א"ש; ת"ל, 1670 - כ"ז בסיון תק"ד, יוני 1744, אייזנשטט), שימש כרב בשידלוביץ (שידלובצא), ורמיזא, פרוסניץ ואייזנשטט. מחבר שו"ת "פנים מאירות". <h3 style="text-align:right">חייו</h3> נולד בליטא בשנת ה'ת"ל, נכד אחותו של הרב שבתי כהן, "הש"ך". בצעירותו למד אצל הרב אברהם אבלי הלוי גומבינר, בעל ה'מגן אברהם' והרב דוד אופנהיימר. לאחר חתונתו למד כעשר שנים בבית חותנו בסוכטשוב ולאחר מכן שימש כרבה של שידלובצא שבפולין. בתפקידו זה הוטלו עליו מטלות רבות שביטלוהו מלימודו, ומשכך החליט לעבור למדינות אשכנז שם יפריעוהו פחות. בעזרת יהודי החצר השר שמשון ורטהיימר, התמנה בגיל 30, בשנת ה'ת"ס (1700), לראש ישיבת ורמיזא. לאחר מכן שימש כרב בפרוסניץ שבמוראביה, שם גידל את רבי יהונתן אייבשיץ, לאחר שהאחרון התייתם מהוריו, והיה לו לאב ולמורה. בשנת ה'תע"ז (1717) התמנה לרבה של קהילת אייזנשטט ו"שבע קהילות". הוא הקים שם ישיבה גדולה שתלמידיה באו מקרוב ומרחוק, ועל ידי כך גדלה השפעתו בחוגים היהודיים שבאזור. תיקן תקנות הנוגעות לסגנון החיים של הקהילה, כגון תקנה האוסרת על משחקי קלפים מלבד בחנוכה, בפורים ובבית היולדת. תקנה זו נשארה בתוקפה בקהילת אייזנשטט עד ליומה האחרון. הוא אימץ את שם העיר כשם משפחתו. בשנת ה'תפ"ג (1723) נאלץ לעזוב את העיר, בשל עלילה נגדו אצל השלטונות, כביכול היה מעורב בגנבה. בספרו "כתנות אור" על התורה בפרשת שמיני, כותב רבי מאיר: "דרוש דרשתי בתוכחת מוסר לעם בקהל המון חוגג בחודש מנחם שנת תפ"ג. כשיצאתי באלו הן הגולין במדינת פולין מחמת מלשינים". אזכור פרשיה זו מופיעה גם בספרו "פנים מאירות" שם הוא כותב: "כ"ד המתפלל בלב נשבר ונדכה וליבי דואג בקרבי שיצילני משפת שקר". לאחר כשנתיים, התוודה אחד העדים על כך שרבי מאיר אינו קשור לפרשה, ובעקבות זאת יכל לחזור לעירו. כשחזר לעירו תיקן "יהי רצון" מיוחד כנגד "המזיקים את ישראל בלשונם והמהרסים מעמדי ומצבי הקהילות", וקבע לאומרו בכל יום שני וחמישי לאחר קריאת התורה. אחד מצאצאיו שמרבה לצטט את דבריו בספרו הוא בעל הפתחי תשובה. <h3 style="text-align:right">מותו</h3> רבי מאיר נפטר בכ"ז בסיון ה'תק"ד (1744), ונקבר בבית העלמין הישן באייזנשטט. על מצבתו נכתב: "פה נטמן הרב הגדול כמהר"ר מאיר אב"ד דק"ק א"ש והמדינה זצ"ל מת ונקבר ביום א' כ"ז סיון תק"ד לפ"ק תנצב"ה". זכרו מונצח בשם הרחוב הקרוי כשם ספרו "פנים מאירות", רחוב הנמצא בשכונת קריית מטרסדורף בירושלים (על שם אחת משבע קהילות). כמו כן צאצאו הרב נתן גשטטנר פתח ישיבה בבני ברק על שמו. צאצא נוסף הוא יהושע ברזילי. זכותו תגן עלינו ועל כל ישראל, אמן
