Saul Lowenstam was born in 1717 in Rzeszów to his parents Aryeh Leib ben Saul (who was the rabbi in Rzeszów at the time) and Miriam the daughter of the Chacham Tzvi. He married Hendele, the daughter of Abraham Kahana, who was rabbi of Grodno, Ukraine. His first rabbinical position was in Lokachi, Ukraine (located in the Lokachi Raion and named Lakacz in Yiddish), followed by Dubno, where he succeeded his father-in-law. After the death of his father in 1755, Lowenstam succeeded him as the Chief Rabbi of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Lowenstam died in Amsterdam on 19 June 1790.He was succeeded as Chief Rabbi by his son, Jacob Moses Lowenstam. <h3>Works</h3> Lowenstam was the author of the Binyan Arielpublished in Amsterdam 1778. He also authored a Torah Commentary HeChatzer HaChadasha published in Amsterdam in 1768. A pamphlet titled Halacha Lema'aseh Rav published in Amsterdam in 1828 contains his 1783 halachic ruling asserting the kashrut of Dutch cheese. May the merit of Rabbi Saul Lowenstam protect us all.  text רבי שאול בן רבי אריה לייב מאמסטרדם; (~ה'תע"ז, 1717 – ז' בתמוז ה'תק"ן, 19 ביוני 1790) היה רב וראש ישיבה מגדולי יהדות אשכנז. רבן של רישא, דובנא, והקהילה האשכנזית באמסטרדם. מכונה ה"בנין אריאל" על שם ספרו. <h3 style="text-align:right">תולדות חייו</h3> נולד ברישא לרבי אריה לייב (נכדו של הרבי ר' העשיל מקראקא) שכיהן כרב העיר ולמרים בתו של החכם צבי. למד תורה אצל אביו והתפרסם כבר בצעירותו כגדול בתורה. בה'תפ"ד שודך להינדא בתו של רבי אברהם כהנא, לימים רבה של דובנא, הזוג נישא רק בה'ת"ץ לאחר שמלאו לו 13. בצעירותו היה אמיד אך איבד את כספו ונאלץ לקבל משרת רבנות בעיר לוקאטש. לאחר פטירת חותנו התמנה לרבנות דובנא רבי יצחק משה כהנא - גיסו (ולימים מחותנו) של רבי שאול. בעקבות פטירתו עבר רבי שאול בשנת ה'תק"ט לכהן כרבה של דובנא - שם גם עמד בראש הישיבה המקומית. קהילה זו הייתה עשירה ופרנסה אותו ואת תלמידי הישיבה בכבוד. ארבע שנים ישב במנוחה, עד ששרפה גדולה כילתה את רוב בתי העיר, הפכה את בני הקהילה לעניים, והמיטה חורבן על ביתו הפרטי וגם על ישיבתו - שנסגרה. בשנת ה'תקט"ו (1754) נקרא למלא את מקום אביו ברבנות העדה האשכנזית של אמסטרדם, ולעמוד בראשות בית המדרש שהקים אביו, תפקידים שבהם החזיק כ-35 שנה. נפטר ביום שבת ז' בתמוז ה'תק"ן, בשעות הצהריים, בגיל 73. נקבר למחרת בבית הקברות באמסטרדם. על מצבת קברו נחרת: <h3 style="text-align:right">בנין אריאל</h3> פ"נ אדמו"ר הרב המפורסם מוהר"ר שאול זצלה"ה בן אדמ"ו מוהר"ר אריה ליב זצלה"ה בעל המחבר ספר חדרי תורה ובית תלמוד הנכללים בבנין אריאל בן ל"ח שנים היה שאול על כיסא אבותיו נ"ע פה קהלתינו ונפטר בשיבה טובה בן ע"ג שנים ש"ק לעת מנחה ונקבר למחרתו יום א' ח' תמוז ותהי ה.מ.ש.ר.ה. על שכמו לפ"ק ת.נ.צ.ב.ה. <h3 style="text-align:right">פועלו הציבורי והתורני</h3> שמו נישא לתהילה כפוסק וכדרשן. רבי חיים יוסף דוד אזולאי שפגש בו עת ביקר באמסטרדם כתב בספרו שם הגדולים: "ואני הדל זכיתי לקבל פני שכינה בשנת תקל"ח מדי עברי בשליחות מצוה וזכיתי להתבסם מתורתו ומענוותנותו ושלמותו" בפולמוס הגט מקליווא היה מראשי הרבנים שהכשירו את הגט ועמד בתקיפות על דעתו. אף הוא כאביו וסבו הרבה להסכים על ספרי האחרונים שבתקופתו. ספרו בנין אריאל (אמסטרדם ה'תקל"ח) כולל חידושים ופרושים לתורה, חמש מגילות, ומסכתות הש"ס. אף על פי שעיקר פרסמו היה כפוסק הלכה ולאו דווקא כדרשן, בחר שלא להדפיס ספר שו"ת אלא ספר אגדה. בהקדמתו נימק שלא רצה שיסמכו עליו הלכה למעשה. למרות זאת, הרבה תשובות בהלכה שכתב מפוזרות בספרי חכמי דורו (כדוגמת שו"ת נודע ביהודה ושו"ת זיכרון יוסף). <h3 style="text-align:right">משפחתו</h3> היה נכדו (בן בתו) של החכם צבי ואחיינו (בן אחותו) של רבי יעקב עמדין. אחיו היה רבי צבי הירש לוין מברלין. גיסם של ר' שאול ור' צבי הירש היה רבה של העיר האג, ר' שאול סג"ל הלוי מהאג, בעל ה"בנין שאול", עמו היה ר' שאול בקשרי ידידות אמיצה. לרבי שאול היו שני בנים ושלוש בנות בנו - רבי יעקב משה כיהן אחריו כרבה העדה האשכנזית של אמסטרדם. נישא לשרה, בתו של הרב צבי הירש לוין (בת דודו). בתו רבקה רייזל נישאה לרבי שמואל ברנשטיין (נכד הפני יהושע) שמילא את מקומו ברבנות. בנו - רבי אריה לייב. נישא לחנה, בתו של רבי יעקב עמדין (דוד אביו). בתו - אשת רבי מאיר יעקב (בנו של רבי פנחס הורוביץ בעל ההפלאה) בתו - אשת רבי אלעזר הלוי, אב"ד זלאזיץ (בנו של רבי יצחק הלוי הורוביץ). בתו - פריידיל. אשת רבי אברהם כהנא, אב"ד ברסטיץ. בנם רבי יעקב כהנא מחבר ספר "גאון יעקב" על מסכת עירובין, היה חתנו של רבי יששכר בער אחי הגאון מווילנה, ונחשב לאחד מגדולי תלמידי הגר"א. זכותו תגן עלינו ועל כל ישראל, אמן
