Zohar Balak
#337
The Holy One Blessed be He follows the same method with Israel. He gives them a beating; if they don’t accept it, he scolds them; if they still didn’t understand, the Holy One Blessed be He says, I see in my children that because of my beating, they fear that their heads would hurt. I feel that it is because of their pain, as it is written;
Isaiah 63:9
“In all their affliction He was afflicted, And the Angel of His Presence saved them; In His love and His pity He redeemed them, And He bore them and carried them All the days of old.”
Then I scolded them, and their appearance changed, as it is written;
Lamentation 4:8
“Now their appearance is blacker than soot; They go unrecognized in the streets; Their skin clings to their bones, It has become as dry as wood.”
They fell into darkness, and I do not recognize them. Now I will beg and implore them, saying;
Micah 6:3
“O My people, what have I done to you? And how have I worn you? Testify against Me.”
You are my only son, the beloved of my soul, see what I did to you, I made you ruler over all my household, and I made you a ruler over all kings of the world. If I did other things, please answer me. You can testify about my actions.

Remember Balak’s advice about the Holy nation and what was Balaam’s reply was. Balak didn’t consider the value of the Torah. He wanted to eradicate the children of Israel as it is written;
Deuteronomy 26:5
“And you shall answer and say before YHVH your God: ‘My father was Aramean, about to perish, and he went down to Egypt and dwelt there, few in number; and there he became a nation, great, mighty, and populous.”
