Genesis 42:17
“וַיֶּאֱסֹף אֹתָם אֶל מִשְׁמָר שְׁלֹשֶׁת יָמִים.”
“So he put them all together in prison three days.”
Rabbi Elazar said, “What are these three days for?” And he answers, “These three days correspond to the three days of Shechem, as it is written;
Genesis 34:25
“וַיְהִי בַיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי בִּהְיוֹתָם כֹּאֲבִים וַיִּקְחוּ שְׁנֵי בְנֵי יַעֲקֹב שִׁמְעוֹן וְלֵוִי אֲחֵי דִינָה אִישׁ חַרְבּוֹ וַיָּבֹאוּ עַל הָעִיר בֶּטַח וַיַּהַרְגוּ כָּל זָכָר.”
“Now it came to pass on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males.”

Lesson;
This Zohar discusses the correlation between the three days that Joseph’s brothers were held under protection and the three days associated with the incident in Shechem. Rabbi Elazar draws a parallel between these events, suggesting a link between the two events. The reference to the three days in Shechem alludes to the time when the men of Shechem were in pain on the third day after their circumcision, making them vulnerable to attack by Shimon and Levi. It could be a connection to retribution, suffering, and Tikkun.

Genesis 42:18
“וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם יוֹסֵף בַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁי זֹאת עֲשׂוּ וִחְיוּ אֶת הָאֱלֹהִים אֲנִי יָרֵא.”
“Then Joseph said to them the third day, “Do this and live, for I fear God:”
Joseph told them on the third day, ‘Do this and live.’ This indicates that he did not act as they did in Shechem, where they caused the men of Shechem to accept circumcision upon themselves, in the secret of the word “זאת” “do this,” which represents the Nukva, the circumcision, and covenant, which is Yessod. After the people of Shechem accepted the covenant, the brothers killed them, leaving none alive. In this case, with Joseph, ‘Do this and live,’ meaning that he intended to let them live. Why? Because he said, ‘I fear God,’ he kept his channel of Yessod in purity. All this harsh treatment that he caused them was only for the sake of Benjamin, meaning to bring his brother Benjamin to him.

Genesis 42:21
“וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל אָחִיו אֲבָל אֲשֵׁמִים אֲנַחְנוּ עַל אָחִינוּ אֲשֶׁר רָאִינוּ צָרַת נַפְשׁוֹ בְּהִתְחַנְנוֹ אֵלֵינוּ וְלֹא שָׁמָעְנוּ עַל כֵּן בָּאָה אֵלֵינוּ הַצָּרָה הַזֹּאת.”
“Then they said to one another, “We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the anguish of his soul when he pleaded with us, and we would not hear; therefore, this distress has come upon us.”
“To one another” refers to Shimon and Levi, as they said to each other when they planned to get rid of Joseph.
Genesis 37:19
“וַיֹּאמְרוּ אִישׁ אֶל אָחִיו הִנֵּה בַּעַל הַחֲלֹמוֹת הַלָּזֶה בָּא.”
“Then they said to one another, “Look, this dreamer is coming!”
In both situations, it was Shimon and Levi.
