Hebrew translation:

169. וְאֵין קֵץ לְכָל עֲמָלוֹ – שֶׁהוּא עָמֵל תָּמִיד, שֶׁמַּקְדִּים יוֹם וָלַיְלָה. גַּם עֵינוֹ לֹא תִשְׂבַּע עֹשֶׁר – וְאֵין לוֹ לֵב לְהַשְׁגִּיחַ וְלוֹמַר, לְמִי אֲנִי עָמֵל וּמְחַסֵּר אֶת נַפְשִׁי מִטּוֹבָה. וְאִם תֹּאמַר שֶׁכְּדֵי שֶׁיֹּאכַל וְיִשְׁתֶּה יוֹתֵר וְיַעֲשֶׂה מִשְׁתֶּה בְּכָל יוֹם תָּמִיד – לֹא כָּךְ, שֶׁהֲרֵי הַנֶּפֶשׁ אֵינָהּ נֶהֱנֵית מִמֶּנּוּ. אֶלָּא וַדַּאי הוּא מְחַסֵּר אֶת נַפְשׁוֹ מִטּוֹב שֶׁל הָאוֹר שֶׁל הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא מִשּׁוּם שֶׁזּוֹהִי נֶפֶשׁ חֲסֵרָה, שֶׁלֹּא הֻשְׁלְמָה כָּרָאוּי. בֹּא רְאֵה כַּמָּה חָס הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא עַל מַעֲשָׂיו, מִשּׁוּם שֶׁרוֹצֶה שֶׁיְִּתֻקַּן וְלֹא יֹאבַד מֵאוֹתוֹ הָעוֹלָם הַבָּא, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ.
170. רַבִּי חִיָּיא שָׁאַל, זֶה שֶׁהוּא צַדִּיק שָׁלֵם וּמִשְׁתַּדֵּל בַּתּוֹרָה יָמִים וְלֵילוֹת וְכָל מַעֲשָׂיו לִשְׁמוֹ שֶׁל הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא וְלֹא זָכָה לְבָנִים בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, כְּמוֹ שֶׁהִשְׁתַּדֵּל בָּהֶם וְלֹא זָכָה, אוֹ שֶׁהָיוּ לוֹ וּמֵתוּ – מַה הֵם לָעוֹלָם הַבָּא? אָמַר לוֹ רַבִּי יוֹסֵי, מַעֲשָׂיו וְהַתּוֹרָה הַהִיא מְגִנִּים עָלָיו לָעוֹלָם הַהוּא.

“יֵשׁ אֶחָד וְאֵין שֵׁנִי גַּם בֵּן וָאָח אֵין לוֹ וְאֵין קֵץ לְכָל עֲמָלוֹ גַּם עֵינוֹ לֹא תִשְׂבַּע עֹשֶׁר וּלְמִי אֲנִי עָמֵל וּמְחַסֵּר אֶת נַפְשִׁי מִטּוֹבָה גַּם זֶה הֶבֶל וְעִנְיַן רָע הוּא.
“There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, Nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks, “For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?” This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.” (Ecclesiastes 4:8).
“And there is no end to all his toil”—this refers to someone who labors tirelessly, both day and night. His eyes are never satisfied with wealth, and he lacks the awareness to reflect and say, “For whom am I toiling and depriving my soul of good?”
If you suggest that he labors in order to eat and drink abundantly or to make daily feasts, this is not the case. For the soul derives no true enjoyment from this. Rather, he is indeed depriving his soul of the goodness of the Light of the World to Come. This is because his soul is incomplete, lacking the wholeness it requires.
Come and see how compassionate the Holy One, Blessed be He, is toward His creations. He provides them with another opportunity for rectification through reincarnation, as He desires their correction and does not want them to lose their portion in the World to Come, as we have explained.

Notes:
The Zohar highlights the futility of material excess and the infinite compassion of the Holy One, Blessed be He, in offering souls opportunities for rectification and ultimate spiritual fulfillment.

Rabbi Chiya asked: “What is the fate of someone who is a complete tzaddik, who labored in Torah day and night, and all his actions were for the sake of the Holy One, Blessed be He, yet he did not merit having children in this world? Whether he tried and was unsuccessful, or he had children, but they passed away—what is their portion in the World to Come?”
Rabbi Yossi replied: “His deeds and his Torah will protect him so that he will merit the World to Come.”
