177. וַיְהִי הוּא טֶרֶם כִּלָּה לְדַבֵּר וגו’. רַבִּי יִצְחָק אָמַר רַבִּי יְהוּדָה, בְּעוֹד שֶׁכָּל הָעִנְיָנִים הוּא רוֹצֶה לְנַסּוֹת עַל הַגּוּף, מַה כָּתוּב? וְהִנֵּה רִבְקָה יֹצֵאת, זֶהוּ הַגּוּף קָדוֹשׁ שֶׁנִּתְעַסֵּק בְּדִבְרֵי תוֹרָה וְכִתֵּת גּוּפוֹ לְהַשִּׂיג וְלָדַעַת אֶת קוֹנוֹ. אֲשֶׁר יֻלְּדָה לִבְתוּאֵל – אָמַר רַב יְהוּדָה, בִּתּוֹ שֶׁל אֵל. בֶּן מִלְכָּה – בֶּן מַלְכָּהּ שֶׁל עוֹלָם. אֵשֶׁת נָחוֹר אֲחִי אַבְרָהָם – חֶבְרַת הַשֵּׂכֶל, גּוּף שֶׁנִּדְבָּק בַּשֵּׂכֶל, וְהִיא אַח הַנְּשָׁמָה. וְכַדָּהּ עַל שִׁכְמָהּ – מַשָּׂא הַחָכְמָה עָלֶיהָ.

“וַיְהִי הוּא טֶרֶם כִּלָּה לְדַבֵּר”, “And it was, he had not yet finished speaking” (Genesis 24:15). Rabbi Yitzchak said to Rabbi Yehuda: While all the matters, he wants to test on the body, what is written? וְהִנֵּה רִבְקָה יֹצֵאת—”And behold, Rebecca came out” (Genesis 24:15), this is the holy body that engaged in the words of Torah and wore out its body to attain and know its Creator. “אֲשֶׁר יָלְדָה לְבֵיתוּאֵל”, “Which she bore to Bethuel” (Genesis 24:15), Rabbi Yehuda said: Daughter of God (בִּתּוֹ שֶׁל אֵל , sounds like בֵיתוּאֵל ). Son of Milka (בֶּן מִלְכָּה), son of the Queen (מַלְכָּהּ) of the world, wife of Nachor, brother of Abraham. Companion of the intellect (חֶבְרַת הַשֵּׂכֶל), a body that cleaves to the intellect, and she is the sister of the soul. “וְכַדָּהּ עַל שִׁכְמָהּ”, “And her jug upon her shoulder” (Genesis 24:15), the burden of wisdom upon her.
Notes:
Rebecca’s emergence symbolizes the holy body, worn out by Torah study to know its Creator, born to Bethuel (“daughter of God”), son of the Queen (Shekhinah). Her jug on the shoulder represents wisdom’s burden, cleaving to intellect (soul’s sister).
