#233
Rabbi Chiya opened and said: “וְזָרְחָה לָכֶם יִרְאֵי שְׁמִי שֶׁמֶשׁ צְדָקָה”, “And the sun of righteousness will shine for you who fear My name” (Malachi 3:20). Come and see: In the future, the Holy One, blessed be He, will shine upon Israel that sun which the Holy One, blessed be He, hid from the day the world was created, because of the wicked of the world. As it is written: “וַיִּמְנַע מֵרְשָׁעִים אוֹרָם”, “And He withholds their light from the wicked” (Job 38:15).
Notes:
The hidden sun, stored since creation, will shine for those who fear YHVH in the future, withheld from the wicked. This continues the theme of light for the righteous versus darkness for the wicked, reflecting divine mercy and judgment.
#234
And that light the Holy One, blessed be He, hid. When it first came out, it shone from one end of the world to the other. Once He looked at the generation of Enosh, and the generation of the Flood, and the generation of the Division (דוֹר הַפְּלַגָּה), and all the wicked, He hid that light.
Notes:
The primordial light, shining universally at first, was hidden due to the sins of early generations and the wicked, awaiting the righteous and future redemption.
#235
When Jacob came and cleaved to that appointee, the prince of Esau, and struck him in his thigh, and he was limping, then what is written? “וַיִּזְרַח לוֹ הַשֶּׁמֶשׁ”, “And the sun rose for him” (Genesis 32:32). Which sun? It is the sun that was hidden, for in this sun there is healing, to heal his thigh. And afterward he was healed by that sun, as it is written: “וַיָּבֹא יַעֲקֹב שָׁלֵם”, “And Jacob came whole” (Genesis 33:18), whose meaning is whole in his body, for he was healed.
Notes:
Jacob’s struggle with Esau’s prince left him limping, but the hidden sun (reserved for the righteous) rose, healing him completely. This sun’s light represents divine mercy and rectification, restoring wholeness after conflict.
