Pinchas 246-248
The Torah teaches us when men and women can have pure unification.
Leviticus 15:19
“ וְאִשָּׁה כִּי-תִהְיֶה זָבָה, דָּם יִהְיֶה זֹבָהּ בִּבְשָׂרָהּ–שִׁבְעַת יָמִים תִּהְיֶה בְנִדָּתָהּ, וְכָל-הַנֹּגֵעַ בָּהּ יִטְמָא עַד-הָעָרֶב”
“When a woman has a discharge, and the discharge in her body is blood, she shall be in her menstrual impurity for seven days, and whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening”
Leviticus 15:28
“ וְאִם-טָהֲרָה, מִזּוֹבָהּ–וְסָפְרָה לָּהּ שִׁבְעַת יָמִים, וְאַחַר תִּטְהָר.”
“When she becomes clean from her discharge, she shall count off for herself seven days; and afterward she will be clean”
The Zohar reveals to us that there is Holiness at the time a couple comes together when they are pure on the physical and spiritual level.
The woman’s menstrual cycle begins with the aspect of death, when the egg in the ovary dies. It represents the judgment that came to women after the first sin. The bleeding is a process when the soul pushes away the death out of the body, to make room for a re-birth.
During that period, most women go through a difficult emotional state that is caused by the death process in her body. A man should not touch his wife or any woman that is in such state, because it transfers the aspect of judgment.
The process of judgment takes about a week until a woman is clean, meaning that the discharge stopped and the process of setting up a new egg in the ovary began again. There should be a count of 7 clean days before the husband can come to his wife.
The first reason is that, the seven days create a ‘ladder’ through the seven Sefirot and connect to the eighth, that is Binah. On that day the woman is ready with a new and strong egg and the man with the light, they can join to create life. Going through seven days also guarantees that the woman will have a Shabbat to cleanse her spiritually and elevate her vessel to Binah.
Doing a Mikveh before the unification purifies her body and soul to make a Holy connection.
This process is one of the precepts and following it reveals a great Light in a couple’s life. No matter what level of spirituality you have, keeping these restrictions benefit you and the family a great deal of Light.
