Daily Zohar # 4665 – Acharei Mot – What to do before asking for help
Daily Zohar 4665
Hebrew translation:
266. אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי, וְהֵם יוֹדְעִים שֶׁהֲרֵי הָעוֹלָם בְּצַעַר, וְהַחַיִּים לֹא רְאוּיִים וְלֹא יוֹדְעִים לְהוֹדִיעַ לָהֶם. בְּאוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה כֻּלָּם צוֹוְחִים עַל שֶׁהַתּוֹרָה נִקְלְתָה וְגָלְתָה לְאוֹתוֹ מָקוֹם. אִם בְּנֵי אָדָם שָׁבִים וּבוֹכִים בְּלֵב שָׁלֵם וְשָׁבִים לִפְנֵי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, אָז כֻּלָּם מִתְכַּנְּסִים וּמְבַקְשִׁים רַחֲמִים וּמוֹדִיעִים לְאוֹתָם יְשֵׁנֵי חֶבְרוֹן, וְנִכְנָסִים וּמוֹדִיעִים לָרוּחַ שֶׁבְּגַן עֵדֶן, כְּמוֹ שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ.
267. וְאִם הֵם לֹא שָׁבִים בְּלֵב שָׁלֵם לְבַקֵּשׁ וְלִבְכּוֹת עַל צַעַר הָעוֹלָם – אוֹי לָהֶם! שֶׁכֻּלָּם מִתְכַּנְּסִים לָרִיק וְאוֹמְרִים: מִי גָרַם לַתּוֹרָה הַקְּדוֹשָׁה לִגְלוֹת עַל יְדֵיהֶם בְּלִי תְשׁוּבָה? וְכֻלָּם בָּאִים לְחַדֵּשׁ (לְהַזְכִּיר) חֲטָאֵיהֶם. מִשּׁוּם כָּךְ אַל יֵלְכוּ לְשָׁם בְּלִי תְשׁוּבָה וּבְלִי תַעֲנִית לְבַקֵּשׁ בַּקָּשָׁה לִפְנֵיהֶם. רַבִּי אַבָּא אָמַר, (הַכֹּל עַל שָׁלֹשׁ) בְּלִי שָׁלֹשׁ תַּעֲנִיּוֹת. רַבִּי יוֹסֵי אָמַר, אֲפִלּוּ אַחַת וּבְאוֹתוֹ יוֹם, וּבִלְבַד שֶׁהָעוֹלָם יֵשֵׁב בְּצַעַר יָתֵר, אָז כֻּלָּם מִזְדַּוְּגִים לְבַקֵּשׁ רַחֲמִים עַל הָעוֹלָם.

Rabbi Chiya said, “I wonder if there is anyone else who knows how to inform the dead.”
Rabbi Abba said: The distress people experience informs them; the Torah tells them. When no one knows how to notify the souls of the Tzadikim, they bring out a Torah scroll near the graves, and the souls awaken because the Torah has been revealed in that place. Then, the angel Dumah informs them.

Rabbi Yossi said: “And they (the souls of the Tzadikim) know that the world is in distress, and the living are unworthy and do not know how to inform them. At that time, they all cry out concerning the Torah, saying that we have stumbled and it has been exiled to this place. If people do Teshuva and weep with a whole heart and return to the ways of the Holy One, blessed be He, they all gather and request mercy, and inform those who sleep in Hebron (the Patriarchs), and they enter and tell the Ruach in the Garden of Eden, as explained above.

If they do not do Teshuva with a full heart to seek and weep over the world’s suffering, woe to them, for all (the souls) gather in vain. They say, ‘Who caused the holy Torah to be exiled by their hands without Teshuva?’ And they all come to recall their sins. Therefore, they (the people) should not go there (to the Tzadikim) without Teshuva and without fasting to make their petitions before them.
Rabbi Abba said: Without three fasts.
Rabbi Yose said: Even one fast is sufficient, and it should be on that day, provided that the world is in great distress. Then all unite—that is, all the Nefesh, Ruach, and Neshamah (soul levels)—to request mercy for the world.
Notes:
The Zohar teaches that it is not enough to seek assistance superficially in times of suffering. True repentance, expressed through heartfelt sorrow and acts like fasting, is essential. Such sincere efforts enable the souls of the Tzadikim to effectively intercede on behalf of the living. The power of unified spiritual action and the necessity of inner transformation bring about Hashem’s compassion and relief for the world.
