Daily Zohar # 4729 – Vayishlach – For there the Elohim were revealed to him
Daily Zohar 4729
Hebrew translation:
162. כִּי שָׁם נִגְלוּ אֵלָיו הָאֱלֹהִים – מִשּׁוּם שֶׁהֵם לֹא נִמְצָאִים אֶלָּא בַּשְּׁכִינָה, שֶׁהֲרֵי שִׁבְעִים הָיוּ שֶׁהֵם נִמְצָאִים תָּמִיד עִם הַשְּׁכִינָה, וְשִׁבְעִים קָתֶדְרָאוֹת סְבִיב הַשְּׁכִינָה, וְעַל זֶה כִּי שָׁם נִגְלוּ אֵלָיו הָאֱלֹהִים, בְּמָקוֹם זֶה שֶׁהִתְגַּלָּה, שֶׁהֲרֵי כָּתוּב וְהִנֵּה ה’ נִצָּב עָלָיו.
163. וַיַּעַל מֵעָלָיו אֱלֹהִים בַּמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אִתּוֹ. רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אָמַר, מִכָּאן שֶׁנַּעֲשָׂה מֶרְכָּבָה קְדוֹשָׁה עִם הָאָבוֹת. וּבֹא וּרְאֵה, יַעֲקֹב הוּא מֶרְכָּבָה קְדוֹשָׁה עֶלְיוֹנָה שֶׁעוֹמֶדֶת לְהָאִיר לַלְּבָנָה, וְהוּא מֶרְכָּבָה לְבַדּוֹ. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב וַיַּעַל מֵעָלָיו אֱלֹהִים.

Come and see, it is written: “וַיִּבֶן שָׁם מִזְבֵּחַ” “And he built there an altar” (Genesis 35:7), but it does not say that he offered libations or burnt offerings upon it. Rather, the meaning is that he corrected the specific level that needed correction. “מִזְבֵּחַ לַה'” “An altar to YHVH” refers to rectifying the lower level, which is the Nukva, to unite it with the higher level, which is Zeir Anpin. Thus, “And he built there an altar” refers to the lower level, the Nukva; “to YHVH” refers to the higher level, Zeir Anpin.
“וַיִּקְרָא לַמָּקוֹם אֵל בֵּית אֵל” “And he called the place El Bet-El” (Genesis 35:7): The name that Jacob gave to the Nukva corresponds to the name of the higher level, which is Binah. When Zeir Anpin illuminates the Nukva, she becomes like her mother, Binah. Therefore, Jacob named her “אֵל” El, which is the name of the mother, and all is unified as one.

“כִּי שָׁם נִגְלוּ אֵלָיו הָאֱלֹהִים בְּבָרְחוֹ מִפְּנֵי אָחִיו” “For there the Elohim were revealed to him” (Genesis 35:7): This refers to angels, as the verse uses the plural “נגלו” (were revealed) rather than “נִגלה” (was revealed).
The question arises: How does this relate to Jacob naming the altar “El Bethel”? The explanation is that the angels are only present where the Shechinah resides. Seventy angels are always found with the Shechinah, corresponding to the seventy thrones surrounding it (as referenced earlier in Zohar Vayera #268). Thus, when the angels are revealed, it signifies the presence of the Shechinah.
Therefore, the verse states: “For there the Elohim were revealed to him”—this occurred at the place of revelation, referring to the Nukva. As it is written: “וְהִנֵּה יְהֹוָה נִצָּב עָלָיו” “And behold, YHVH stood above it” (Genesis 28:13), referring to the ladder, which symbolizes the Nukva.
This indicates that the revelation of angels coincided with the revelation of the Shechinah. Hence, Jacob named the altar “El Bethel,” reflecting the revelation of the Shechinah, and attributed this revelation to the presence of the angels.

Genesis 35:13:
וַיַּעַל מֵעָלָיו אֱלֹהִים בַּמָּקוֹם אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אִתּוֹ
“And Elohim ascended from him in the place where He had spoken with him.”
Rabbi Shimon said, “From here, we learn that Jacob, together with the patriarchs, became a holy chariot for YHVH.”
Come and see, Jacob is the supreme holy chariot for Zeir Anpin, which stands to illuminate the moon, representing the Nukva. He alone is considered the chariot because he encompasses within himself the qualities of the Patriarchs—Abraham (Chessed) and Isaac (Gevurah). This is because Tiferet (Jacob) includes both Chessed and Gevurah. This is the meaning of “And Elohim ascended from him”—like one (Elohim) who departs from their chariot.
