215. רַבִּי יוֹסֵי אָמַר, וַהֲרֵי כָּתַב בָּרִאשׁוֹנָה וַיַּרְא יוֹסֵף אִתָּם אֶת בִּנְיָמִין, וְכָאן כָּתוּב וַיִּשָּׂא עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת בִּנְיָמִין אָחִיו, אֵיזוֹ רְאִיָּה רָאָה? אֶלָּא רָאָה בְּרוּחַ הַקֹּדֶשׁ אֶת בִּנְיָמִין שֶׁחֶלְקוֹ הָיָה עִמָּהֶם בָּאָרֶץ, וּבְחֶלְקָם שֶׁל בִּנְיָמִין וִיהוּדָה תִּשְׁרֶה הַשְּׁכִינָה, שֶׁהֲרֵי רָאָה אֶת יְהוּדָה וְאֶת בִּנְיָמִין שֶׁבְּחֶלְקָם יִהְיֶה הַמִּקְדָּשׁ. וְזֶהוּ וַיַּרְא יוֹסֵף אִתָּם אֶת בִּנְיָמִין, רָאָה אוֹתוֹ עִמָּהֶם, וְאֶת יוֹסֵף שֶׁהָיָה אָחִיו לֹא רָאָה עִמָּהֶם בְּאוֹתוֹ הַחֵלֶק.
216. אַף כָּאן, וַיִּשָּׂא עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת בִּנְיָמִין אָחִיו בֶּן אִמּוֹ. מַה כָּתוּב אַחֲרָיו? וַיְמַהֵר יוֹסֵף כִּי נִכְמְרוּ רַחֲמָיו אֶל אָחִיו וַיְבַקֵּשׁ לִבְכּוֹת וַיָּבֹא הַחַדְרָה וַיֵּבְךְּ שָׁמָּה.
217. רַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה פָּתַח וְאָמַר, (ישעיה כב) מַשָּׂא גֵיא חִזָּיוֹן מַה לָּךְ אֵפוֹא כִּי עָלִית כֻּלָּךְ לַגַּגּוֹת. בֹּא רְאֵה, הֲרֵי פֵּרְשׁוּהָ, בִּזְמַן שֶׁנֶּחֱרַב בֵּית הַמִּקְדָּשׁ וְהָיוּ שׂוֹרְפִים אוֹתוֹ בָאֵשׁ, עָלוּ כָּל אוֹתָם הַכֹּהֲנִים עַל כָּתְלֵי [גַּגּוֹת] הַמִּקְדָּשׁ, וְכָל הַמַּפְתְּחוֹת בִּידֵיהֶם, וְאָמְרוּ: עַד כָּאן הָיִינוּ גִזְבָּרִים שֶׁלְּךָ. מִכָּאן וְאֵילָךְ טֹל אֶת שֶׁלְּךָ.

Rabbi Yossi said: But it is written earlier: “וַיַּרְא יוֹסֵף אֹתָם וְאֶת בִּנְיָמִין אָחִיו”, “And Joseph saw them and Benjamin his brother” (Genesis 43:16). And now it is written: “וַיִּשָׂא עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת בִּנְיָמִין אָחִיו”, “And he lifted up his eyes and saw Benjamin his brother” (Genesis 43:29). What is the seeing here? And he answers: Rather, he saw with the Holy Spirit Benjamin, whose portion was with them in the Land, and in the portion of Benjamin and Judah the Shekhinah would dwell, for he saw Judah and Benjamin that in their portion was the Holy Temple. And this is “וַיַּרְא יוֹסֵף אֹתָם וְאֶת בִּנְיָמִין”, “And Joseph saw them and Benjamin, that he saw him with them. And Joseph, who was his brother, did not see himself with them in that portion where the Holy Temple was.
Notes:
The first seeing is Joseph’s spiritual vision: he sees Benjamin’s portion joined with Judah’s for the Holy Temple (Shekhinah’s dwelling). The second is physical. Joseph sees Benjamin united with the brothers but knows he himself does not belong in that holy portion.

“אַף כָּאן וַיִּשָׂא עֵינָיו וַיַּרְא אֶת בִּנְיָמִין אָחִיו בֶּן אִמּוֹ”, “Even here, ‘And he lifted up his eyes and saw Benjamin his brother, son of his mother’ (Genesis 43:29).” This too means that he saw the building of the Holy Temple in his portion. What is written after it? “וַיְמַהֵר יוֹסֵף כִּי נִכְמְרוּ רַחֲמָיו”, “And Joseph hurried, for his heart was stirred” (Genesis 43:30), etc., “וַיֵּבְךְּ שָׁמָּה”, “and he wept there.” That is, because he saw the Holy Temple’s destruction.
Notes:
Joseph’s vision of Benjamin’s Temple portion stirs compassion and tears (נִכְמְרוּ רַחֲמָיו), foreseeing the Temple’s ruin.

Rabbi Chezkiah opened and said: “מַשָּׂא גֵיא חִזָּיוֹן מַה לָּךְ אֵפוֹא כִּי עָלִית כֻּלָּךְ לַגַּגּוֹת”, “The burden of the Valley of Vision… all of you to the roofs” (Isaiah 22:1). Come and see: They said that when the Temple was destroyed and burning, all the priests climbed up to the roofs of the Temple, and all the keys of the Temple in their hands. And they said: “Up to here we were your treasurers; from here on, take what is yours.”
Notes:
The priests’ ascent to the roofs during the Temple’s destruction, casting keys to God, symbolizes surrendering stewardship. It reflects the end of divine service amid tragedy, evoking sorrow for the Shekhinah’s exile.
