Holy Zohar text. Daily Zohar -5141

Another interpretation of “אִם לֹא תֵדְעִי לָךְ הַיָּפָה בַּנָּשִׁים” “If you do not know, O fairest of women” etc. (Song of Songs 1:8). Come and see: When tzaddikim are found in the world, and these schoolchildren (תִּינוֹקוֹת שֶׁל בֵּית רַבָּן) are found and occupy themselves with Torah, the Congregation of Yisrael is able to endure with them in exile. But if not — if they are not in sufficient measure — as it were, she and they cannot endure in the world.
And if tzaddikim are found, they are seized first and die to atone for the people of their generation. And if not, these kids — for whose sake the world exists — are seized first, and the Holy One, blessed be He, takes them from the world even though no sin is found in them. And not only this, but He removes the Congregation of Yisrael from Him, and she goes out into exile.
Notes:
The Zohar offers a striking explanation: The Shekhinah’s ability to remain with Israel in exile depends on the presence of tzaddikim and young children learning Torah. When these two groups are present in sufficient measure, the Congregation of Yisrael can endure the galut.
When their merit is lacking, the consequences are severe: the tzaddikim are taken first to atone for the generation. If that is still insufficient, even innocent schoolchildren — “the kids for whose sake the world exists” — are taken from the world. Ultimately, the Shekhinah herself is distanced, and the exile intensifies. This teaches the tremendous protective power of tzaddikim and children’s Torah study, and the heavy spiritual price the world pays when that protection is missing.
