Zohar Vayikra
Continued from previous DZ
#315
“וְאִם כָּל עֲדַת יִשְׂרָאֵל יִשְׁגּוּ וְנֶעְלַם” “And if the whole congregation of Israel shall err” etc. (Leviticus 4:13). Rabbi Shimon opened: “נָשִׁים שַׁאֲנַנּוֹת קוֹמְנָה שִׁמְעוּ קוֹלִי” “Women at ease, rise up, hear my voice” etc. (Isaiah 32:9). How much must a person contemplate the honor of his Master, so that he may be found a complete person before the Holy One, blessed be He. For when the Holy One, blessed be He, created man, He created him complete. As it is said: “אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הָאֱלֹהִים אֶת הָאָדָם יָשָׁר” “that God made man upright” etc. (Ecclesiastes 7:29). “אֶת הָאָדָם” indicates that there were male and female, and the female was included in the male. And then “upright” is written. But afterward: “וְהֵמָּה בִקְשׁוּ חִשְּׁבֹנוֹת רַבִּים” “but they have sought out many calculations” (Ecclesiastes 7:29).
#316
Come and see: From the orifice of the supernal great abyss, a certain female was found — a spirit above all spirits — and we have established that her name is Li-li-th. And she was found at the beginning with Adam, as his female. And at the hour when Adam was created, and his body was completed, a thousand spirits from the left side gathered around that body. This one wanted to enter him, and that one wanted to enter him, but they could not. Until the Holy One, blessed be He, rebuked them. And the man was lying as a body without a spirit, and his appearance was green. And all these spirits surrounded him.
Notes:
Rabbi Shimon teaches that a person must constantly contemplate the honor of his Master to remain a complete being. When Adam was first created, he was perfect — male and female united as one (“upright”). Only afterward did humanity pursue many calculations and become fragmented.
The Zohar then begins to describe the creation process: before Adam received his holy soul, a thousand impure spirits from the left side (including Lil-ith) attempted to inhabit his body. This reveals the primordial struggle between holiness and impurity at the moment of human creation, and how the body without the proper spirit is vulnerable to these forces. This sets the stage for deeper teachings on the soul, Lil-ith, and the rectification of humanity.
