Zohar Vayikra

#317
At that time, a certain cloud descended and pushed away all those spirits that were surrounding the man. And at that hour it is written: “וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים תּוֹצֵא הָאָרֶץ נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה” “And God said: Let the earth bring forth a living soul” (Genesis 1:24). And we have established that the Nukva — which is Malchut — became impregnated from the male, which is Zeir Anpin, with that soul of the First Man. And she, Malchut, brought forth that spirit to blow it into the man, comprised of two sides, from male and female, as is fitting. This is what is written: “וַיִּפַּח בְּאַפָּיו נִשְׁמַת חַיִּים וַיְהִי הָאָדָם לְנֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה” “And He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living soul” (Genesis 2:7). “A living soul” literally — that is, comprised of male and female.
And whoever is in doubt about this, because he does not know whether this “chayah” is the lower chayah, which is Malchut, or the chayah whose name is Israel, which is Zeir Anpin, or from the male or from the female — let him be precise, for behold it is not written “to the living soul” (which would mean the known chayah), but it is written “to a living soul” in general, which implies everything. That is to say, this living soul comprises all.
#318
And when Adam arose, after he received the living soul, his female was fixed in his side. The holy neshamah within him was spreading to this side of the male and to this side of the female, and it was sufficient for both — for the male and for the female — because it was comprised of male and female. Afterward, the Holy One, blessed be He, sawed the man and rectified his female (as an individual sharing the same soul). This is what is written: “וַיִּבֶן יְהוָה אֱלֹהִים אֶת הַצֵּלָע” “And YHVH God built the rib” etc. (Genesis 2:22). “The rib” — we have already established that it means “side,” as it is said: “וּלְצֶלַע הַמִּשְׁכָּן” “and for the side of the Tabernacle” (Exodus 26:20). “And He brought her to the man” — that is, He brought her with her rectifications like a bride to the canopy.
Notes:
The Zohar describes the creation of Adam’s soul: Malchut (the Nukva) became impregnated by Zeir Anpin and brought forth a soul that was a complete union of male and female. This is the meaning of “the man became a living soul” — a soul that included both aspects.
Initially, the female aspect was attached to Adam’s side—the holy neshamah spread to both sides, sustaining both male and female. Then Hashem separated and rectified the female (the rib/side), bringing her to Adam as a perfected bride. This teaches that the original human being contained both masculine and feminine within one body, and the separation was a process of rectification to allow for proper union, mirroring the divine male-female structure.
