Rabbi Chiya said: “כִּי עָשִׂיתָ” “For You have done it” — certainly. And what have you done? The world. That is to say, the meaning of the verse is: I will give thanks to You for the world that You have made. Because of this world that the Holy One, blessed be He, made and established, a person gives thanks to the Holy One, blessed be He, every day. “וַאֲקַוֶּה שִׁמְךָ כִי טוֹב נֶגֶד חֲסִידֶיךָ” “And I will wait for Your Name, for it is good in the sight of Your pious ones.” (Psalm 52:11) Thus it is certainly, for in the sight of the tzaddikim the Name of the Holy One, blessed be He, is good. But not in the sight of the wicked, who despise it every day, for they do not occupy themselves with Torah.
The merchant said to him, “That is fine.” But I heard a thing behind the wall, and I am afraid to reveal it. Rabbi Chiya and Rabbi Yosi said to him, “Speak your words.” For the Torah is not an inheritance to one place.
Notes:
Rabbi Chiya explains that the verse “I will give thanks to You forever, for You have done it” refers to giving thanks for the very existence of the world that Hashem created. Daily thanksgiving is rooted in recognition of this creation. The second part of the verse emphasizes that God’s Name is good, specifically in the eyes of the pious who engage with Torah, while the wicked who ignore it despise the Name.
The merchant’s hesitation to share what he overheard prompts the sages’ encouragement, underscoring that Torah knowledge is not limited to any particular group or place — it is open to all who seek it sincerely. This moment in the cave turns a chance encounter into an opportunity for spiritual elevation and the sharing of hidden insights.
