Zohar Vayikra

#420
“And a branch of a thick tree” ”עֲנַף עֵץ עָבֹת”: This is the Holy King, who is Tiferet that is held on both sides, Chessed and Gevurah, for Tiferet is the middle line that includes within it the two lines. And because of this, myrtle (הֲדַס), they take three branches. “Branch of a thick tree” means a branch that makes a branch of a thick tree, that is, that it holds to every side, to the right and to the left. “עַרְבֵי נָחַל” “And willows of the brook,” these are the two pillars, that is, Netzach and Hod, from which the abundance comes out to the branches of palm trees, which is Yessod. Branches of palm trees are held above in Zeir Anpin and held below in Malchut. We have already said (above #412) the etrog, which is Malchut, comes out from within the thorns of the tree, that is, from the judgments that are called thorns in Zeir Anpin, which is called tree, for she is built from the judgments of Zeir Anpin. And so are the branches of palm trees, which are Yessod that is also held in them, in the thorns of the tree, which are the judgments of Zeir Anpin, for Yessod inclines to the left of Zeir Anpin, where there are judgments. Certainly everything that comes out to the world comes out from here, and from here they come. That is, from these four species mentioned above.
Notes:
The four species allude to the structure of Zeir Anpin and Malchut. Tiferet (myrtle) balances right and left; Netzach and Hod (willows) channel flow to Yessod (palm); Malchut (etrog) emerges from the judgments (thorns) of Zeir Anpin. Everything flows to the world through this unity.
#421
Rabbi Yossi opened, “וְאָבוֹאָה אֶל מִזְבַּח אֱלֹהִים” “And I will come to the altar of God” (Psalms 43:4). Who is the altar of God? This is the altar above, that is, Malchut, which is certainly the altar of God, for she indicates judgment. And this is the well of Isaac. That is, Malchut, called a well, and built from Gevurah, the secret of Elohim called Isaac. And sometimes she is called the altar of YHVH, which is the name of mercy, as it is
written, “קוּם מִלִּפְנֵי מִזְבַּח יְהוָה” “Rise up before the altar of YHVH” (1 Kings 8:54). And therefore the worlds inherit from here, from Malchut, judgment and mercy, because she suckles from this side and from that side. That is, from the side of judgment and from the side of mercy. And we have already established the matter.
Notes:
Malchut is the altar of Elohim (judgment, linked to Isaac and Gevurah) and of YHVH (mercy). She draws from both sides and therefore transmits both judgment and mercy to the lower worlds.
