#422
“נֶפֶשׁ כִּי תִמְעֹל מַעַל” “If a soul commits a trespass…” (Leviticus 5:15). Rabbi Yitzchak said, We have already established that it is certainly the nefesh (low level of the soul), and not the neshama and the ruach, for they do not sin, but rather they depart before the sin. It is written, “וְהָיְתָה נֶפֶשׁ אֲדֹנִי צְרוּרָה בִּצְרוֹר הַחַיִּים אֵת יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ” “And the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with YHVH your God” (1 Samuel 25:29). And it is written, “וְאֵת נֶפֶשׁ אֹיְבֶיךָ יְקַלְּעֶנָּה בְּתוֹךְ כַּף הַקָּלַע” “and the souls of your enemies He shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling” (1 Samuel 25:29). So reward and punishment reach mainly the nefesh.
Notes:
Rabbi Yitzchak stresses that only the nefesh sins. The higher levels of soul (neshama and ruach) leave before the sin occurs. Therefore, both reward and punishment primarily affect the nefesh.
#423
“זַכָּאִין אִינּוּן צַדִּיקַיָּא” “Happy are the righteous…” Happy are the righteous, for they have an upper portion in the Holy One, blessed be He, in the holy portion, in the holies of the King, because they sanctify themselves with the holies of their Master. And whoever sanctifies himself, the Holy One, blessed be He, sanctifies him, as it is written, “וְהִתְקַדִּשְׁתֶּם וִהְיִיתֶם קְדֹשִׁים” “And you shall sanctify yourselves and be holy” (Leviticus 11:44). A person sanctifies himself from below, and they sanctify him from above. And when the person is sanctified with the holiness of his Master, they clothe him with a holy soul, which is the inheritance of the Holy One, blessed be He, and of the Congregation of Israel, for the soul is an offspring of Zeir Anpin and Nukva. And then he inherits everything. And these are the ones who are called children of the Holy One, blessed be He, as it is written, “בָּנִים אַתֶּם לַיהוָה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם” “You are children of YHVH your God” (Deuteronomy 14:1). And we have already established this.
Notes:
The righteous who sanctify themselves below receive holiness from above. They are clothed with a holy soul that comes from Zeir Anpin and Nukva, inherit everything, and are called children of the Holy One, blessed be He.
