Zohar Vayikra

#424
Come and see, it is written, “תּוֹצֵא הָאָרֶץ נֶפֶשׁ חַיָּה” “Let the earth bring forth a living soul” (Genesis 1:24). And we have established “a living soul” without specification (as above, section 317). And from that portion King David inherited and was bound in the upper bond, and inherited the kingship, as we have learned. And because of this, “וְהָיְתָה נֶפֶשׁ אֲדֹנִי צְרוּרָה בִּצְרוֹר הַחַיִּים” “And the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life” (1 Samuel 25:29). And we have established that the nefesh is bound to the ruach, and the ruach to the neshama, and the neshama to the Holy One, blessed be He. Therefore they are called the bundle of life. Happy is his portion, one who inherits this upper inheritance.
Notes:
The “living soul” that the earth brings forth alludes to the portion from which David inherited kingship and was bound in the upper bond. The nefesh is bound to the ruach, the ruach to the neshama, and the neshama to the Holy One, blessed be He — this is the bundle of life.
#425
Woe to those wicked ones whose souls do not merit in this world, all the more so in the world to come. About them it is written, “וְאֵת נֶפֶשׁ אֹיְבֶיךָ יְקַלְּעֶנָּה בְּתוֹךְ כַּף הַקָּלַע” “and the souls of your enemies He shall sling out as from the hollow of a sling” (1 Samuel 25:29). They go and wander in the world and do not find a place to rest in which to bind themselves. And they become defiled on the side of impurity. And a herald calls and says, “נֶפֶשׁ כִּי תִמְעֹל מַעַל בַּיהוָה” “If a soul commits a trespass against YHVH” (Leviticus 5:21). The sanctuary of YHVH is defiled — that is, his own soul. And one should not say the actual sanctuary of YHVH, for he did not enter into holiness and was not included in it, so how could he defile it? And they are the harmers of the world, that is, the souls of the wicked, because they cling to the Other Side and to impurities.
Notes:
The souls of the wicked find no resting place and wander, becoming attached to impurity. Their “trespass” defiles their own soul rather than the true sanctuary, since they never entered holiness. Such souls become agents of harm in the world.
According to Kabbalah and the teachings of the Holy Ari, the punishment of כף הקלע (the hollow of the sling) is a severe spiritual state in which the soul is flung back and forth by destructive forces and cannot find rest or a place to bind itself. This occurs mainly when a person becomes heavily attached to the Other Side through serious sins, especially those that waste or defile the holy seed (hotza’at zera levatalah) and other severe breaches of the covenant of the brit. Such sins create impure forces that cling to the nefesh, preventing it from ascending and forcing it to wander and suffer after death until the damage is repaired.
To avoid this state, one must carefully guard the brit, maintain sexual purity, and strengthen the bond with holiness through daily Torah study, prayer with intention, and acts of kindness. When such sins have already been committed, the Ari teaches that complete repentance (Teshuvah), confession, immersion in the Mikveh, giving charity, and intensive Torah study can repair the damage and free the soul from the sling. The merit of the righteous and the study of Zohar also help draw the soul out of this suffering and restore it to the bundle of life. Tikkun Haklali is a powerful cleansing connection if a person doesn’t repeat his sins. It is never too late to do Teshuvah.
