Rabbi Yitzchak said, All his words are words of falsehood, and even at the beginning of the words he spoke falsehood, as it is written, “אַף כִּי אָמַר אֱלֹהִים לֹא תֹאכְלוּ מִכֹּל עֵץ הַגָּן” “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” (Genesis 3:1). And it is not so, for it is written, “מִכֹּל עֵץ הַגָּן אָכֹל תֹּאכֵל” “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat” (Genesis 2:16), and He permitted him everything.
Notes:
Rabbi Yitzchak points out that the serpent’s first words were already a lie. God had permitted Adam to eat from every tree of the garden; the serpent falsely claimed a total prohibition.

Rabbi Yossi said, We have already learned that the Holy One, blessed be He, commanded him concerning idolatry, as it is written “וַיְצַו” “And He commanded” (Genesis 2:16), and concerning the spilling of blood and concerning sexual immorality. And he raises a difficulty: But how many people were there in the world that the Holy One, blessed be He, needed to warn him about them? And he answers, Rather, certainly all these seven commandments were only concerning this tree of the Tree of Knowledge, because in it all these commandments are held, as he continues to explain.
Notes:
The seven Noahide commandments were given to Adam in connection with the Tree of Knowledge. All the major prohibitions (idolatry, bloodshed, and sexual immorality) are rooted in the proper relationship to that tree.
