23. וּמַה הֱשִׁיבָם שְׁלֹמֹה עַל זֶה? הַפָּסוּק אַחֲרָיו, וְאָמַר, וּמִי יוֹדֵעַ רוּחַ בְּנֵי הָאָדָם הָעֹלָה הִיא לְמָעְלָה וְרוּחַ הַבְּהֵמָה הַיֹּרֶדֶת הִיא לְמַטָּה לָאָרֶץ. מִי יוֹדֵעַ בְּאוֹתָם טִפְּשִׁים שֶׁלֹּא יוֹדְעִים בִּכְבוֹד הַמֶּלֶךְ הָעֶלְיוֹן וְלֹא מִסְתַּכְּלִים בַּתּוֹרָה, רוּחַ בְּנֵי הָאָדָם הָעֹלָה הִיא לְמָעְלָה, לְמָקוֹם עֶלְיוֹן, לְמָקוֹם נִכְבָּד, לְמָקוֹם קָדוֹשׁ, לְהִזּוֹן מֵאוֹר עֶלְיוֹן, מֵאוֹר הַמֶּלֶךְ הַקָּדוֹשׁ, לִהְיוֹת צָרוּר בִּצְרוֹר הַחַיִּים, וְנִמְצָא לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ הַקָּדוֹשׁ עוֹלָה תְמִימָה, וְזוֹהִי הָעֹלָה הִיא לְמָעְלָה.
24. וְרוּחַ הַבְּהֵמָה הַיֹּרֶדֶת הִיא לְמַטָּה לָאָרֶץ, וְלֹא לְאוֹתוֹ מָקוֹם שֶׁהָיָה כָּל אָדָם, שֶׁכָּתוּב בּוֹ (בראשית ט) בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים עָשָׂה אֶת הָאָדָם, וְכָתוּב (משלי כ) נֵר ה’ נִשְׁמַת אָדָם. אֵיךְ אוֹמְרִים אוֹתָם טִפְּשִׁים שֶׁאֵינָם מִבְּנֵי הָאֱמוּנָה, וְרוּחַ אֶחָד לַכֹּל (קהלת ג)? תִּפַּח רוּחָם! עֲלֵיהֶם כָּתוּב (תהלים לה) יִהְיוּ כְּמֹץ לִפְנֵי רוּחַ וּמַלְאַךְ ה’ דּוֹחֶה. אֵלֶּה יִשָּׁאֲרוּ בַגֵּיהִנֹּם לְאוֹתָן דְּרָגוֹת תַּחְתּוֹנוֹת, וְלֹא יַעֲלוּ לְדוֹרֵי דוֹרוֹת. עֲלֵיהֶם כָּתוּב (שם קד) יִתַּמּוּ חַטָּאִים מִן הָאָרֶץ וּרְשָׁעִים עוֹד אֵינָם בָּרְכִי נַפְשִׁי אֶת ה’ הַלְלוּיָהּ. בָּאוּ רַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה וְרַבִּי יֵיסָא וְנָשְׁקוּ רֹאשׁוֹ. אָמְרוּ, וּמַה כָּל זֶה הָיָה אִתְּךָ וְלֹא יָדַעְנוּ? אַשְׁרֵי הַשָּׁעָה הַזּוֹ שֶׁפָּגַשְׁנוּ אוֹתְךָ.

The person with the ‘backpack of precious stones’ continues the study of the verse raised by Rabbi Yesa. He shares with the two students of Rabbi Shimon his understanding of the words of King Solomon.
He tells them that King Solomon explained the difference between the soul of man and the soul of beast, quoting Ecclesiastes 3:21
“מִי יוֹדֵעַ, רוּחַ בְּנֵי הָאָדָם–הָעֹלָה הִיא, לְמָעְלָה; וְרוּחַ, הַבְּהֵמָה–הַיֹּרֶדֶת הִיא, לְמַטָּה לָאָרֶץ”
“Who knows that the breath (soul) of man ascends upward and the breath (soul) of the beast descends downward to the earth?”

The foolish people don’t study Torah and are considered as the aspect of ‘beasts’. They don’t know that the soul of a man ascends to a holy place above, where it can be included with those who merit eternal life.

The soul of the beast descends to earth and is not like a man, that was created in the image of God, which is the aspect of the Ten Sefirot.

Genesis 9:6
“כִּי בְּצֶלֶם אֱלֹהִים, עָשָׂה אֶת-הָאָדָם.”
“ for in the image of God He made man”

Proverbs 20:27
“נֵר יְהוָה, נִשְׁמַת אָדָם”
“The spirit of man is the candle of YHVH”

The candle of YHVH is the life force that keeps the soul of a man in his body. Those souls that don’t have the ‘candle’ of YHVH will be pushed away from the Light and fall into hell for countless generations.
