Hebrew translation:

57. וְכָתוּב, (במדבר ז) וַיִּשְׁמַע אֶת הַקּוֹל מִדַּבֵּר אֵלָיו (וְגוֹ’) מִבֵּין שְׁנֵי הַכְּרֻבִים וַיְדַבֵּר אֵלָיו. רַבִּי יִצְחָק אָמַר, מִכָּאן לָמַדְנוּ, שֶׁבְּכָל מָקוֹם שֶׁלֹּא נִמְצָא זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה, אֵינוֹ כְּדַאי לִרְאוֹת פְּנֵי שְׁכִינָה. זֶהוּ שֶׁכָּתוּב (תהלים קמ) יֵשְׁבוּ יְשָׁרִים אֶת פָּנֶיךָ, וְשָׁנִינוּ, כָּתוּב (דברים לב) צַדִּיק וְיָשָׁר הוּא, זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה, אַף כָּאן כְּרוּבִים זָכָר וּנְקֵבָה. וַעֲלֵיהֶם כָּתוּב, (תהלים צט) אַתָּה כּוֹנַנְתָּ מֵישָׁרִים. וְעַמִּים בְּמֵישָׁרִים. וּמִשּׁוּם כָּךְ, (שמות כה) וּפְנֵיהֶם אִישׁ אֶל אָחִיו, וַהֲרֵי בֵּאַרְנוּ.
58. שָׁנִינוּ שֶׁאָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי, פַּעַם אַחַת הָיָה צָרִיךְ הָעוֹלָם לְמָטָר, בָּאוּ לִפְנֵי (הָלְכוּ אֵצֶל) רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן רַבִּי יֵיסָא וְרַבִּי חִזְקִיָּה וּשְׁאָר הַחֲבֵרִים. מְצָאוּהוּ שֶׁהָיָה הוֹלֵךְ לִרְאוֹת אֶת רַבִּי פִּנְחָס בֶּן יָאִיר, הוּא וְרַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר בְּנוֹ. כֵּיוָן שֶׁרָאָה אוֹתָם, פָּתַח וְאָמַר, (תהלים קלג) שִׁיר הַמַּעֲלוֹת הִנֵּה מַה טּוֹב וּמַה נָּעִים שֶׁבֶת אַחִים גַּם יָחַד. מַה זֶּה שֶׁבֶת אַחִים גַּם יָחַד?

Moses was the first one to serve in the holy of holies and experience the presence of the Shechina coming down on the Ark, between the two Cherubim.
Numbers 7:89
“וּבְבֹא מֹשֶׁה אֶל-אֹהֶל מוֹעֵד, לְדַבֵּר אִתּוֹ, וַיִּשְׁמַע אֶת-הַקּוֹל מִדַּבֵּר אֵלָיו מֵעַל הַכַּפֹּרֶת אֲשֶׁר עַל-אֲרֹן הָעֵדֻת, מִבֵּין שְׁנֵי הַכְּרֻבִים; וַיְדַבֵּר, אֵלָיו”
“Now when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with Him, he heard the voice speaking to him from above the mercy seat (Kaporet) that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim, so He spoke to him.”
The two Cherubim were facing each other and had the aspect of male and female in unity. Male and female are needed in order to create flow of light and draw the Shechina to come and rest over the Kaporet (Top of the Ark) and connect to the priest from between the Cherubim.
