Jeremiah 46:20
“עֶגְלָה יְפֵה פִיָּה מִצְרָיִם קֶרֶץ מִצָּפוֹן בָּא בָא.”
“Egypt is a very pretty heifer, But destruction comes, it comes from the north.”
The word ‘heifer/calf’ ‘עֶגְלָה’ represents the God that Egypt worshipped at that time. The heifer is described as ‘very pretty’ because Egypt focused on the material level. In the end, their destruction will come from the north.
In the future, the children of Israel that were under the control of Egypt for 210 years, will rule Egypt. It implied in;
Genesis 45:19
“וְאַתָּה צֻוֵּיתָה זֹאת עֲשׂוּ קְחוּ לָכֶם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם עֲגָלוֹת לְטַפְּכֶם וְלִנְשֵׁיכֶם וּנְשָׂאתֶם אֶת אֲבִיכֶם וּבָאתֶם.”
“Now you are commanded—do this: Take carts (עֲגָלוֹת) out of the land of Egypt for your little ones and your wives; bring your father and come.”
“Carts” in Hebrew ‘עֲגָלוֹת’ has the same root as ‘Heifer’ as explained above. The command to “take carts” implies that in the future Israel would take control of the gods of Egypt.
#113
The above verse was said by Joseph when he sent his brothers with carts to bring his father, Jacob, to Egypt. Rabbi Elazar says that with this action Joseph sent a clue to Jacob. Before they separated, they studied the subject of breaking the neck of a heifer (Deuteronomy 21). The story is related to finding a killed person between two cities, and the killer is not known. To avoid the spread of negative spirits in that place, they correct the situation by taking a heifer that was never used for work and breaking its neck. With that, they stop the unsolved killing from turning into judgment over the nearby cities.
#114
All people die by the angel of death, except for those killed by other people. The angel of death cannot take the soul of a person before he is given permission.
