Zohar Vaera
Continued from previous DZ
#135
When the Holy One, Blessed be He, wishes to take vengeance on the nations that worship idols, the Left side becomes aroused, and the moon, which represents Malchut, fills with blood from that side. Then, judgment in the form of blood flows to the springs and rivers that are on the left side.
#136
When the aspect of blood is aroused against a nation, it is caused by the blood of the slain because the Holy One, Blessed be He, will awaken another nation to come and kill them. However, in Egypt, the Holy One, Blessed be He, did not wish to bring another nation to arouse blood judgment against them, meaning to kill them because the Israelites were among them. He did not want the Israelites who were living in their land to suffer. Instead, the Holy One, Blessed be He, struck them with the plague of blood, turning their rivers into blood so they could not drink.
#137
Because Egypt’s government had dominion over the Nile, the Holy One, Blessed be He, first punished them by striking down their god, as the Nile was one of their deities. Similarly, the other gods of theirs also turned into blood. This is what is meant by “both in buckets of wood and pitchers of stone”;
Exodus 7:19
Then YHVH spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their streams, over their rivers, over their ponds, and over all their pools of water, that they may become blood. And there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in wood and stone.’ ”
Lesson;
The first plague in Egypt demonstrated Hashem’s dominance over the Egyptian gods. They relied on the Nile for sustenance and life’s continuation. Transforming their waters into blood revealed to the Egyptians that YHVH, the God of Israel, reigned supreme.
When the Israelites drew water from the Nile, it remained pure, but the Egyptians obtained only blood, compelling them to purchase water from the Israelites, thereby enriching them.
The color red symbolizes the Left aspect and desire. Our blood is red because it possesses the capability to contain the soul level of Nefesh. When blood circulation ceases in the body, indicating that the heart has stopped functioning, the soul departs from the body.
