#211
The Ra’aya Meheimna (Faithful Shepherd), who is the soul of Moses, said: “At that time, before the coming of the Mashiach, those who possess the Mishnah, the possessors of higher wisdom, the possessors of Kabbalah, and the possessors of the secrets of the Torah — they will be in distress, and they will have no sustenance. This is what is meant by,’כְּאַיָּל תַּעֲרֹג עַל אֲפִיקֵי מָיִם’ ‘As a deer longs for streams of water.’ These, meaning the possessors of the wisdom mentioned above, are the channels “streams of water” (אֲפִיקֵי מַיִם) of the Torah to the Shechinah, for the Torah is called water, and there is no Torah except through the middle column, which is Zeir Anpin, the middle line. For these streams of water, who are the possessors of wisdom mentioned above, from whom Torah flows, which is water, they walk in sorrow and poverty. These are the birth pangs and labor pains of the Shechinah, as it is said of her, ‘וְתָגֵל יוֹלַדְתֶּךָ’ ‘Your mother will rejoice.’ And with these pains, she will be, meaning in their suffering, of the possessors of Torah and wisdom mentioned above. Their suffering is considered the birth pangs of the Shechinah.

#212
Through this labor pain, in which she (the Shechinah) cries out, the seventy members of the Sanhedrin above are awakened. Until her voice reaches the הויה HVYH, and immediately ‘קוֹל ה’ יְחוֹלֵל אַיָּלוֹת’ ‘The voice of YHVH makes the deer give birth,’ who are the possessors of the Mishnah mentioned above, as it is written: ‘בְּתוּלוֹת אַחֲרֶיהָ רֵעוֹתֶיהָ’ ‘The maidens follow her, her companions.’ All of them will have strength like a woman in labor, in the pressing distress of the hour, as they face many ‘bites’ from the evil inclination, which is the Snake that bites them with various kinds of pressures.

Notes:
This Zohar explains that the intense suffering and trials faced by the scholars of the Torah are like the labor pains of the Shechinah. Through these struggles, the Sanhedrin above are awakened. Their cries of distress rise up to the Holy Name, invoking his intervention.
The phrase “The voice of YHVH causes the deer to give birth.” refers to the Torah scholars, likened to deers, who are deeply connected to the teachings of the Mishnah. Just as maidens (symbolizing purity) follow the Shechinah, these scholars endure hardship and suffering as if they were going through labor. They face significant challenges from the evil inclination (the Snake), which “bites” them, creating difficult pressures and temptations. These trials are part of the spiritual journey, leading to a greater redemption, much like labor pains lead to the birth of new life.
