Rabbi Abba opened and said: “מַיִם עֲמֻקִּים עֵצָה בְלֶב אִישׁ וְאִישׁ תְּבוּנָה יִדְלֶנָּה” “Deep waters are counsel in the heart of a man, but a man of understanding will draw it out” (Proverbs 20:5).
“Deep waters are counsel in the heart of a man”—this refers to the Holy One, Blessed be He, for He devises plans and brings about causes to direct events in the world. Through Joseph, He set the course of events to fulfill the decree of famine upon the world.
“But a man of understanding will draw it out” refers to Joseph, who uncovered and revealed these deep matters that the Holy One, Blessed be He, had decreed upon the world through the interpretation of the dream.
#184
Come and see: Joseph not only refrained from repaying his brothers with evil but also performed acts of kindness and truth with them. Such is always the way of the Tzadikim. Because of this, the Holy One, Blessed be He, continually shows them mercy—both in this world and in the World to Come.
#185
“Deep waters” refers to Yehuda. It has been explained that this applies to the moment when Yehuda approached Joseph concerning Benjamin. “But a man of understanding will draw it out,” refers to Joseph, who then revealed himself to his brothers.
