Come and see: Abraham, before he was circumcised, it was not said of him that he kept the Torah. But once he was circumcised—What is written? “עֵקֶב אֲשֶׁר שָׁמַע אַבְרָהָם בְּקֹלִי וַיִּשְׁמֹר מִשְׁמַרְתִּי מִצְוֹתַי חֻקּוֹתַי וְתוֹרֹתָי” “Because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My Torahs.” (Genesis 26:5) And all of this is because he was circumcised, and a holy imprint was engraved upon him, which he guarded properly. And it is considered for him as though he had kept the entire Torah. Isaac—it is also written about him: “וְאֶת בְּרִיתִי אָקִים אֶת יִצְחָק” “And I will establish My covenant with Isaac.” (Genesis 17:21) And therefore, the Torah itself is called a covenant (Brit).

Come and see: Yosef (Joseph)—because he guarded this covenant (Brit) and did not want to be false to it, he merited honor in this world and honor in the World to Come. And not only that—but the Holy One, Blessed be He, placed His Name within him, As it is written: “עֵדוּת בִּיהוֹסֵף שָׂמוֹ” “A testimony in Yehosef (Joseph) was placed” (Psalms 81:6)—meaning that the Name Yud-Hei-Vav (יה” ו) was added to the name יוסף, Yosef. And he merited the blessings of this world and the blessings of the World to Come.
Notes:
Guarding the Brit—especially in the face of temptation—is a path to the highest spiritual honor. By not being false to the covenant, Yosef merited Divine elevation, Attachment to Hashem’s Name, And blessings in both worlds. His story teaches that spiritual integrity, especially in purity matters, opens gates to divine presence and eternal reward. The Zohar presents Yosef not just as a historical figure but as a spiritual model—the one who teaches us that by guarding the holy sign of the covenant, we align ourselves with Hashem’s Name and eternal blessing.
