Zohar Noach
Continued from previous DZ
#183
And Rabbi Yitzchak said: At the beginning, when he sought mercy for them, what did he say? “לָמָה יְהוָה יֶחֱרֶה אַפְּךָ בְּעַמְּךָ”, “Why, YHVH, should Your anger burn against Your people” (Exodus 32:11). And he asks: And this word, “why,” how did Moses say it, when they committed idolatry, as it is
said: “עָשׂוּ לָהֶם עֵגֶל מַסֵּכָה וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ לוֹ וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלֶּה”, “They made for themselves a molten calf and bowed to it and said, ‘These'” (Exodus 32:8). And Moses said “לָמָה” “why.” And he answers: Rather, thus we learned, one who seeks to appease for another, on behalf of a person who sinned against him, should not make that sin great, but should diminish the sin before him. And afterward, he should magnify the sin before the other, the sinner. And therefore, Moses said before the Holy One, blessed be He, “לָמָה יֶחֱרֶה”, “Why should Your anger,” for he diminished the sin. And afterward, he turned to Israel and magnified the sin, as it is written: “אַתֶּם חֲטָאתֶם חֲטָאָה גְדוֹלָה”, “You have sinned a great sin” (Exodus 32:30).

#184
And he did not let the Holy One, blessed be He, rest until he gave himself over to death for Israel, as it is written: “וְעַתָּה אִם תִּשָּׂא חֲטָאתָם”, “And now, if You will forgive their sin” (Exodus 32:32). And the Holy One, blessed be He, forgave them, as it is written: “וַיִּנָּחֶם יְהוָה עַל הָרָעָה”, “And YHVH relented concerning the evil” (Exodus 32:14). And Noach did not do so, but sought to be saved and abandoned the whole world.

Notes:
Moses diminishes Israel’s sin before YHVH (לָמָה יֶחֱרֶה) and magnifies it before them (חֲטָאָה גְדוֹלָה), sacrificing himself (וְעַתָּה אִם תִּשָּׂא) to secure forgiveness (וַיִּנָּחֶם), unlike Noach, restoring zivug’s mercy.
