167. רַבִּי אֶלְעָזָר וְרַבִּי יוֹסֵי הָיוּ הוֹלְכִים בַּדֶּרֶךְ. אָמַר רַבִּי יוֹסֵי לְרַבֵּי אֶלְעָזָר, וַדַּאי מַה שֶּׁאָמַרְתָּ שֶׁיַּעֲקֹב בְּחִיר הָאָבוֹת הוּא, וְהוּא אָחוּז לְכָל הַצְּדָדִים, וְקָרָא שְׁמוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל, וְכָתוּב לֹא יִקָּרֵא שִׁמְךָ עוֹד יַעֲקֹב כִּי אִם יִשְׂרָאֵל יִהְיֶה שְׁמֶךָ, וְכָתוּב וַיִּקְרָא אֶת שְׁמוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל, לָמָּה חָזַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא וְקָרָא לוֹ יַעֲקֹב בְּכַמָּה פְעָמִים, וְהַכֹּל קָרְאוּ לוֹ יַעֲקֹב כְּמוֹ מִקֹּדֶם? אִם כָּךְ, מַה זֶּה וְלֹא יִקָּרֵא שִׁמְךָ עוֹד יַעֲקֹב?
168. אָמַר לוֹ, יָפֶה אָמַרְתָּ. פָּתַח וְאָמַר, (ישעיה מב) ה’ כַּגִּבּוֹר יֵצֵא כְּאִישׁ מִלְחָמוֹת יָעִיר קִנְאָה, פָּסוּק זֶה פֵּרְשׁוּהוּ. אֲבָל בֹּא רְאֵה, כַּגִּבּוֹר יֵצֵא? גִּבּוֹר צָרִיךְ לִכְתֹּב! כְּאִישׁ מִלְחָמוֹת? אִישׁ מִלְחָמוֹת צָרִיךְ לִכְתֹּב!

Rabbi Elazar and Rabbi Yossi were walking on the way.
Rabbi Yossi said to Rabbi Elazar: “Certainly it is as you said: Jacob is the choicest of the patriarchs and includes all sides, that is, he includes right and left. Therefore, his name was called Israel. As it is written: “לֹא יִקָּרֵא שִׁמְךָ עוֹד יַעֲקֹב כִּי אִם יִשְׂרָאֵל יִהְיֶה שְׁמֶךָ”,  ‘Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name’ (Genesis 35:10), and it is written: “וַיִּקְרָא אֶת שְׁמוֹ יִשְׂרָאֵל”,  ‘And He called his name Israel’ (Genesis 35:10).
Yet it is difficult: Why did the Holy One, blessed be He, afterwards call him Jacob many times? And everyone continues to call him Jacob as at the beginning. If so, what is the meaning of “לֹא יִקָּרֵא שִׁמְךָ עוֹד יַעֲקֹב”,  ‘Your name shall no longer be called Jacob’?”
Notes:
Rabbi Yossi affirms Jacob’s supreme status as the patriarch who unites right (Chessed) and left (Gevurah), earning the name Israel. Yet he questions why Scripture and everyone still call him Jacob after the divine declaration that “Jacob” would no longer be used.

And he answered him: “You have spoken well,” meaning that his question was good. He opened and said: “יְהוָה כַּגִּבּוֹר יֵצֵא כְּאִישׁ מִלְחָמוֹת”, “YHVH goes forth like a mighty man, like a man of war” (Isaiah 42:13). This verse has been explained, but come and see: It is written “כַּגִּבּוֹר”, “like a mighty man,” but it should have said gibor (mighty man). “כְּאִישׁ מִלְחָמוֹת”, “like a man of war,” but it should have said ish milchamot (man of war).
Notes:
Rabbi Elazar praises Yossi’s question about Jacob’s name, then opens a new teaching on “יְהוָה כַּגִּבּוֹר יֵצֵא” (Isaiah 42:13). He questions the verse’s phrasing: why כַּגִּבּוֹר (like a mighty man) instead of gibor, and כְּאִישׁ מִלְחָמוֹת (like a man of war) instead of ish milchamot? This sets the stage for a deeper exploration of divine attributes.
