Another interpretation of the verse “יֵשׁ הֶבֶל”, “there is a vanity” (Ecclesiastes 8:14), etc. As we said, its meaning is that it strengthens the world. How? Because there are righteous men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the wicked, that is, the deed of a transgressor comes to them — that is, a daughter of an idol-worshipper or another deed from those deeds that are the deeds of the wicked — and they stand in their existence and do not sin, from fear of their Master, and they do not want to become defiled. Like many true righteous ones to whom such deeds came, and they were mighty in strength, who did the will of their Master and did not sin. And about this it is written: vanity is done on the earth, and it is strengthened in its power.
Notes:
Another view on יֵשׁ הֶבֶל (Ecclesiastes 8:14). The “vanity” strengthens the world when righteous men face temptations of wicked deeds (e.g., relations with idol-worshippers’ daughters) yet remain steadfast through fear of God. Their mighty strength in resisting sin upholds divine order.
#171
This is when one commandment comes to them, which is the deed of the righteous, and they merit it and do it. Like, there was a Jewish murderer robber. He was found in the mountains with idol-worshipping robbers. And when a Jew passed there, he would save him and protect him from them. And Rabbi Akiva would say about him: There are wicked men to whom it happens according to the deeds of the righteous.
Notes:
Even a wicked Jewish robber, living among idol-worshippers, merits one righteous deed (saving Jews), aligning with “אֲשֶׁר מַגִּיעַ אֲלֵיהֶם כְּמַעֲשֵׂה הַצַּדִּיקִים” (Ecclesiastes 8:14). Rabbi Akiva highlights this partial merit, showing how a single act can elevate even the flawed.
