172. וְלָכֵן הַבְּרָכָה הַזּוֹ צְרִיכִים כָּל הָעָם לְבָרֵךְ, וּבְעֶרֶב שַׁבָּת, בִּרְצוֹן הַלֵּב וּבְשִׂמְחָה צָרִיךְ לְהַתְחִיל בַּתְּחִלָּה בַּבְּרָכָה הַזּוֹ, שֶׁתִּתְבָּרֵךְ הַשַּׁבָּת הַזּוֹ שֶׁל עֶרֶב שַׁבָּת (בַּלַּיְלָה) מֵהָעָם הַקָּדוֹשׁ כָּרָאוּי בַּבְּרָכָה הַזּוֹ.
173. (בָּרְכוּ) כְּשֶׁמַּתְחִילִים יִשְׂרָאֵל לְבָרֵךְ, קוֹל הוֹלֵךְ בְּכָל הָרְקִיעִים, שֶׁמִּתְקַדְּשִׁים בִּקְדֻשַּׁת עֶרֶב הַשַּׁבָּת: אַשְׁרֵיכֶם הָעָם הַקָּדוֹשׁ שֶׁאַתֶּם מְבָרְכִים וּמְקַדְּשִׁים לְמַטָּה כְּדֵי שֶׁיִּתְבָּרְכוּ וְיִתְקַדְּשׁוּ לְמַעְלָה כַּמָּה מַחֲנוֹת עֶלְיוֹנִים קְדוֹשִׁים. אַשְׁרֵיהֶם בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, וְאַשְׁרֵיהֶם בָּעוֹלָם הַבָּא. וְלֹא מְבָרְכִים יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶת הַבְּרָכָה הַזּוֹ, עַד שֶׁמִּתְעַטְּרִים בַּעֲטָרוֹת שֶׁל נְשָׁמוֹת קְדוֹשׁוֹת, כְּפִי שֶׁאָמַרְנוּ. אַשְׁרֵי הָעָם שֶׁזָּכוּ לָהֶם בָּעוֹלָם הַזֶּה, לְזַכּוֹתָם לָעוֹלָם הַבָּא.

And therefore this blessing all the people must recite, and at the entry of Shabbat, with the will of the heart and with joy they must begin at the outset with this blessing, so that this Shabbat of the entry of Shabbat — which is the night of Shabbat, meaning Malchut — may be blessed from the holy people as is fitting, through this blessing.

When Israel begins to bless, the voice goes forth through all the firmaments that are sanctified with the holiness of the entry of Shabbat. Fortunate are you, holy people, that you bless and sanctify below so that they may be blessed and sanctified above. How many holy supernal camps — fortunate are they in this world and fortunate are they in the world to come. And Israel does not recite this blessing until they are crowned with the crowns of the holy souls, as we have said. Fortunate are the people who merited them in this world, to merit them in the world to come.

On this night, it is the union (with their wives) of the wise, when they are crowned with these holy souls. And although we have already established this, it is all one. And in every place where you find regarding this matter concerning the sages — sometimes in this way and sometimes in that way — it is all one. And these matters we have already established. But at this time, when all are crowned with new holy souls and spirits — additional beyond the days of the week — then it is the time of their union, so that they may draw down for this union an influx of holiness in the supernal rest, and holy children may come forth as is fitting.
Notes:
The teaching on the profound congregational response “ברוך ה’ המבורך לעולם ועד” (“Blessed is the YHVH, the Blessed One, forever and ever”) at the entry of Shabbat, emphasizing its role in the rectification and elevation of Malchut (ליל שבת, the night of Shabbat, which is Friday night).
The entire holy community of Israel is required to recite this blessing with heartfelt intention and joy precisely at the moment Shabbat enters (at the beginning of the Arvit prayer). This act infuses Malchut with blessing from below, enabling her to receive the full divine influx channeled through Yessod of Zeir Anpin (as explained in prior sections). The blessing creates a reciprocal sanctification: Israel’s recitation below arouses and sanctifies the supernal realms above, causing the voice to reverberate through the firmaments and drawing down holiness to the holy camps on high.
The tzaddikim and Torah scholars participate uniquely: when reciting the blessing, they are crowned with the “crowns of holy souls” — or additional soul levels that descend on Shabbat. This crowning prepares them for the sacred union (תשמיש, marital intimacy) on Shabbat night, which is not ordinary but elevated — drawing down supernal holiness and rest (menucha elyona) into the act. The purpose is to produce holy offspring, as the union occurs under the influence of these additional holy souls and spirits, beyond the weekday state.
The Zohar stresses that Shabbat night is the time when lower and upper worlds unite, Malchut is fully blessed and filled, and the righteous, through their holy unions, bring forth sanctified generations that sustain the chain of divine blessing into the future.
