Daily Zohar # 5082 – Terumah – Divine communion in the higher source
Daily Zohar 5082

#176
Because on the weekdays, all the souls of the righteous dwell in the earthly Garden of Eden. And when the day is sanctified at the entry of Shabbat, all these camps of holy angels appointed over the lower Garden of Eden raise up these souls that dwell in the lower Garden of Eden, to bring them to that firmament that stands over the Garden, for since they are from the world of Asiyah, they have no permission to ascend beyond this. And from there, holy chariots that surround the Throne of Glory of the King — which is Beriah — are prepared, and they raise all these souls to the supernal Garden of Eden that is in Beriah.
Notes:
On weekdays, the righteous souls remain in the lower Garden of Eden (Asiyah). At the entry of Shabbat, holy angels elevate them to the firmament above that realm, but they cannot ascend further on their own. Holy chariots then carry them upward to the supernal Garden of Eden in Beriyah (corresponding to Binah), where YHVH enters to delight on Shabbat night. This ascent reflects the elevation of Malchut and the righteous through Shabbat’s sanctification, enabling divine communion in the higher source.
#177
Once these spirits ascend to the supernal Garden of Eden, then other holy spirits descend to this world to be crowned upon the holy people. These ascend to the supernal Garden of Eden, and those descend to be crowned upon the holy people. That is to say, just as there is an ascent for the souls that are in the Garden of Eden, so too there is an ascent for the holy people, who are crowned with an additional soul (נשמה יתרה, neshama yeteira).
#178
And if you say: Behold, the earthly Garden of Eden on the day of Shabbat is empty without the souls of the righteous — it is not so. Rather, souls go, and souls come; souls ascend, and souls descend; souls depart from the Garden, and other souls enter into the Garden. All these are souls of the righteous that are being cleansed and purified during the weekdays and have not yet entered the lower Garden of Eden. At the time when these souls depart from the Garden of Eden to the supernal Garden of Eden, these [other souls] enter the lower Garden of Eden, and the Garden is not left empty. It is like the secret of the showbread (לֶחֶם הַפָּנִים) on the day it is taken: others are placed in their place.
Notes:
At the entry of Shabbat, righteous souls ascend from the lower Garden of Eden (Asiyah) to the supernal Garden (Beriah), while holy additional spirits descend to crown Israel with the extra soul of Shabbat. Simultaneously, souls still purifying in the lower realms enter the earthly Garden to replace those who ascended, ensuring the Garden remains filled. This continuous exchange — ascent of the purified and entry of the ascending — mirrors the showbread ritual: no vacancy occurs, as new souls take the place of those elevated, sustaining the divine structure and holiness throughout Shabbat.
