Zohar Terumah
#179
And if you say: When the souls return from the supernal Garden of Eden to the lower Garden of Eden on the weekdays, how do the places expand — in length, width, and height — within the Garden, so that it can contain them all and it is not noticeable?
And he answers: It is like the land of the deer (אֶרֶץ הַצְּבִי, Eretz ha-Tzvi) that extended in all directions, and it was not noticeable. And like the deer itself, whose skin grows with it in all directions as it grows, and it is not noticeable. And there are several souls that, once they ascend to the supernal Garden of Eden, do not descend from there again, and they remain there even on the weekdays.
#180
Souls ascend, and souls descend, so that the holy people may be crowned with them. And at the entry of Shabbat — meaning before the day is sanctified — there is a rotation (gilgul) of the souls: these go, and these come, these ascend, and these descend. Who has seen how many holy chariots are rushing here and there, all in joy, all with desire! These souls are to crown the holy people, to crown several righteous in the Garden of Eden below, and this continues until the hour when the herald stands and proclaims “Holy, holy.” Then rest and quiet are found for all. And the wicked in Gehinnom — all of them are quieted in their place, and they have rest. And all the souls are crowned — meaning they attain the three upper sefirot (ג”ר, Gimel Rishonot) — these above and these below. Fortunate are the people whose portion this is.
Notes:
The Zohar describes the dynamic exchange of souls at Shabbat’s entry: righteous souls ascend to the supernal Garden (Beriah) while others descend to crown Israel with the extra soul and to adorn the tzaddikim below. This movement continues joyfully via holy chariots until the proclamation “Holy, holy” signals full sanctification — bringing universal rest, even to the wicked in Gehinnom. All souls then attain higher levels (Gimel Rishonot — the supernal triad). The lower Garden expands miraculously like the “land of the deer” to accommodate returning souls without strain, and some elevated souls remain permanently above, even on weekdays. This reveals Shabbat as the time of cosmic harmony, elevation, and universal quietude through the rotation and crowning of souls.
