Zhoar Chaye Sarah
#44
There are three parts to the night. Each of these parts has significance for the body, the soul and the Holy One Blessed Be He. When a person goes to sleep at night, his body stays in bed and his soul ascends and comes before the Holy One. If the soul is righteous then she is welcomed with joy, otherwise she is rejected and pushed out.

Rabbi Yehuda quotes Song of Songs 5:8
“הִשְׁבַּעְתִּי אֶתְכֶם, בְּנוֹת יְרוּשָׁלִָם: אִם-תִּמְצְאוּ, אֶת-דּוֹדִי–מַה-תַּגִּידוּ לוֹ, שֶׁחוֹלַת אַהֲבָה אָנִי”
“I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if you find my beloved, that you tell him I am sick with love.”
Rabbi Pinchas repeats Rabbi Yehuda’s words and explains that ‘daughters of Jerusalem’ is the aspect of the souls that have the merit to be in the upper Jerusalem, which is the spiritual parallel to Jerusalem of the world below.
‘Sick’ is a state that represent lack of light. The Hebrew word is ‘חולה’ with numerical value of 49 that is one less than 50. 50 is the aspect of Binah. Without the light of Binah we are all in the aspect of sick. Shabbat is our healing time because we have connection to the Torah and Binah.
The Zohar quotes the above verse because it is all about the desire for the Light. Our souls constantly desire the Light for fulfilment. Some souls seek higher Light from Binah and they are welcomed above. The souls that seek easy access to energy from the lower levels are pushed out from accessing the higher pure levels.
Jerusalem of the lower level is like a sick body without the light that brings completion and fulfilment. Without the Holy Temple and the constant flow of Light to the world, Jerusalem is ‘sick’. That is why Jerusalem is a code word for the soul’s yearning for the light, feeling sick without it.
This aspect is revealed from the name itself.
Jerusalem , ‘ירושלם’ is numerically 586, same as ‘Shofar’, ‘שופר’, which is the aspect of connection to the upper levels.
The actual pronunciation of the name is ‘Yerushalayim’ that is normally requires the letter Yod י to be present just before the last letter of the name. Instead we find only the ‘chirik’ with is a vowel the comes under the Yod in order to pronounce it proper. Interesting is that the English word ignores the Yod and I guess is because the missing Yod.
We find 622 times the incomplete form of the name ‘ירושלם’ and only 5 times the complete and proper form of the name ‘ירושלים’ in the Bible. (tap here for the search tool I used)
The 5 times the name appears is related to the Holy aspect of Jerusalem.
The letter Yod י represent the Light from Keter and Chokmah and the name without the Yod that appears 622 times in the Bible has the numerical value of the word בכתר, ‘in Keter’, revealing where to find the missing Light that Jerusalem, ‘ירושלם’ needs to be ‘healthy’.
The verse express the desire of the body (Jerusalem) to connect to the Light it needs. The souls that ascend are asked to look for the ‘the beloved’ that is the Holy One Blessed be He, and asked to heal its love with his presence.
The complete name will come to be when Mashiach removes the negativity from the worlds and bring the third and everlasting Holy Temple.
When we go to sleep we can have an open conversation with God (no complaints or demands), expressing our desire to have more light in our lives by asking guidance. Our soul will carry the message and if we are doing our work to be pure, we may see changes for the better manifested in everything we do. It’s obviously depends on many aspect of our spiritual work but it is always good to start by following the spiritual laws from the Torah, especially as we study directly from the Zohar as we do here.
