Furthermore, we have learned that this verse, “מִפְּנֵי שֵׂיבָה תָּקוּם” “Before the gray-headed you shall rise,” is to be interpreted as the friends have expounded the Torah warns a person that before he reaches old age, he should be in good standing in the world, meaning he should do Teshuva. This is what brings him honor “הדר.” But if he repents only at the end of his life, there is not much glory for the person because he is already old and cannot be as sinful. His true glory is when he is in his prime and is good.
King Solomon cried out and said,
Proverbs 20:11
“Even a child is known by his deeds, Whether what he does is pure and right.”
Similarly, it is written,
Ecclesiastes 12:1
“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the difficult days come, and the years draw near when you say, “I have no pleasure in them.”
Rabbi Elazar said, “Indeed, this path is prepared before us, and this is the way of the Holy One, blessed be He.”

Rabbi Yosei began by saying:
Psalm 1:6
“For YHVH knows the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked shall perish.”
He asks, what does it mean that “YHVH knows”? He answers that the Holy One, blessed be He, knows and watches over the way of the righteous to do good to them and to protect them. He walks before them to guard them. Therefore, anyone who embarks on a journey should ensure that the path is aligned with the way of the Holy One and invite the Holy One to accompany him. This is why it is written, “For YHVH knows the way of the righteous,” meaning He is involved in their path, but “the way of the wicked will perish” because the Holy One is not found in their way and does not walk with them.
